Blackheath Football Club (later Blackheath Rugby Club) was founded in 1858 by old boys of Blackheath Proprietary School who played a "carrying" game of football made popular by Rugby School.
Blackheath Rugby Club initially played its matches on the heath (meeting and changing at the Princess of Wales public house) but occasional interruptions from spectators led the club to move, initially to a private field (Richardson's Field) in Blackheath before moving to the Rectory Field in 1883.

From 1907-1914, rugby was played in the “Big Game” between Stanford and Cal. Pomeroy joined the Olympic Club in 1907 and went on to be one of the most enthusiastic devotees to sport that has ever been connected to the Club.
In 1908, with the “enthusiastic support” of Club President William F. Humphrey and the board of directors, the rugby team was launched at the OC with Douglas Erskine as its first commissioner.

Blackheath's claim is that they are 'the oldest open rugby club in the world' - having opened their doors in 1858.
It appears that the Guy's Hospital Rugby Club have been playing the code for the longest time of all but not being an open club, this does not affect the Club's status
