Blacklisted is a considerably darker and more understated affair than The Virginian or Furnace Room Lullaby, and its sometimes stark, sometimes elegant 3 a.m.
Which isn't to say Blacklisted is a total departure for Neko Case; her big, bold, but silky smooth voice is still a thing of beauty, and if anything, she's still learning more remarkable things she can do with it, with the result being some of her finest and most insightful performances to date.
And Case continues to grow as a songwriter; penning most of the album all by herself, Case is a lyricist willing to answer to both her heart and her head, and she had a fine ear for a melody to boot.

 Neko Case: Blacklisted (2002): Reviews
Her albums have matured exponentially with every release, and with Blacklisted, an album that will get your blood pumping and give you goosebumps at the same time, Neko Case emerges as a true original.
Blacklisted is soaked to the bone in rueful wit, luxurious miserablism, and morbid cold sweat—c&w virtues too often reduced to self-pity by lesser latter-day sweethearts of the rodeo.
While much of "Blacklisted" is hyper-stylized, suited for playing against the backdrop of psychedelic sunsets that only exist in novels and movies, the album's heart remains Case's voice, as real and strong as they come.

Ash - Twilight Of The Innocents : album review
Ash's last album, Meltdown, seemed like an unashamed attempt to "break" America - an all-rocking yet still all-popping set of Foo Fighters-shaped anthems that dispensed with some of the superfluous pleasantries of old.
I liked it (isn't this how Ash were always supposed to sound?) but one person who very definitely did not was guitarist Charlotte Hatherley and it was not the biggest shock in the world when she left Ash last year to concentrate on her burgeoning solo career.
Blacklisted, for example, is a blatant Pixies tribute with a bass-line that instantly recalls Debaser.

Nude as the News: Neko Case: Blacklisted
Blacklisted is the kind of album that needs no apologies and, to paraphrase a former president, it simply is what it is. And that doesn't depend on what the meaning of the word "is" is.
The album marks a huge step for Case, a well-traveled musician who didn't start playing music until she was 18.
Much of the album consisted of predictable cover tunes, as it was clear Case was still learning her trade.

On this, her third album, Case gracefully adds to her repertoire, taking on the roles of songwriter and musician, in addition to vocalist, with an intuitive ease.
The haunting, lush layers of 'Blacklisted' serve as a showcase for Neko's formidable vocal strengths and her talent for creating this intensely intimate work.
Please note that 'Blacklisted' is currently available in the US via Bloodshot Records and in Canada from Mint.

Stereophile: Recording of February 2006: Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
It was hard to connect to, and didn't dig as deep as or possess the sparks of promise that made her 1997 debut, The Virginian, and its 2000 follow-up, Furnace Room Lullaby, such honest, heartfelt, virtuoso vocal tours de force.
On her last studio album, 2002's Blacklisted, Case's songwriting clearly revealed that she was searching for a new vehicle for her voice.
Blacklisted also showed that, lyrically, Case was beginning to tap into unknown worlds of her own emotions and of harrowing storytelling.

Nude as the News: Neko Case: The Tigers Have Spoken
Often considered one of rock's truest nomads, when she's not recording albums with one of her many sidebands or by herself, Neko can be found playing a club somewhere in a Town Near You.
For her biggest fans, Blacklisted finally was testament that their girl could write an album that matched her live shows, which are usually something to behold.
The album closes with a strong yet typical interpretation of the old standard "Wayfaring Stranger." Again, though, Case's strong vocals are aided immensely by the harmonies.

However, their later tracks lack the appeal of their earlier songs, which makes the album drag slightly and perhaps explains why they are releasing a ‘best of’ instead of new material.
In general, the album is really enjoyable with a number of tracks that unquestionably prove The Charlatans’ talent.
The album's weakness is that the first four tracks have such a sense of urgency that the following numbers seem dull by comparison.

Fast 'n' Bulbous Reviews: Neko Case * Blacklisted (Bloodshot, 2002)
As good as those albums were, something big happened in the last couple years.
Whether it was hard touring or she went to the crossroads and sold her soul to the devil, Case has blossomed into a world class songwriter and singer, totally in the league of Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn.
The production makes the album sound like it could have been recorded in the sixties, as if Owen Bradley was at the controls.

On the album itself, her vocal style moves away from outright honky-tonk but retains her twang, garnering comparisons to musicians such as Cline, Lynn, Hazel Dickens, Tanya Tucker, and Dolly Parton.
Some believe the title Blacklisted alludes to Case being banned for life from the Grand Ole Opry because she took her shirt off during a performance on August 4, 2001, [3] though Case herself has denied this.
The album was primarily recorded in Tucson, Arizona over the course of two years as Neko worked on the live "The Tigers Have Spoken" and continued to play with The New Pornographers.

Neko Case - Blacklisted - CD review
She may have started out as a punk rock drummer, but as of the last few years Neko Case is about the closest thing we have to the new voice of Americana music.
On her third album Blacklisted Case digs her spurs deep into the hind-quarters of rootsy country music without sounding affected or nostalgic.
After leaving home when she was just 15 and heading for Canada, Case began playing drums with several punk bands in Vancouver.

Neko Case - Blacklisted (Album Review)
Blacklisted begins with the atmospheric, Appalachian-influenced number Things That Scare Me, wherein multiple layers of guitars evoke images of driving fast on a dark and rainy deserted road.
The depth of the instrumentation on Blacklisted is courtesy of Case’s very talented support band, which features members of The Sadies, Calexico, and Giant Sand as well as Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel.
It’s that Blacklisted as a whole gets dull due to the repetitive nature of the tunes' tempos, which march along with precisely the same cadence and structure.

Arguably Case’s most focused and consistent album, ‘Blacklisted’ is the perfect portal into her gorgeously half-lit world.

Music preview: Neko Case - Salon
On her latest album, "Blacklisted," alt-country chanteuse Case hangs vivid lyrical images over spectral guitar lines.
She's played drums for Pacific Northwest punk outfits Cub and Maow; lent her powerful alto to the Canadian wall-of-sound supergroup the New Pornographers; and wailed along with Carolyn Mark as the old-time country duo the Corn Sisters.
There's still a hint of twang in songs like "Tightly" and the walking-banjo licks of "Things That Scare Me." But the album as a whole is reminiscent of mid-'90s alt-rock songwriters like Tanya Donnelly and Kristin Hersh, artists who hang vivid lyrical images over spectral guitar lines.

It was included on their smash-hit album Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. from 1967.
Though the faux-fab frenzy over the four simian made-for-TV boy-toys had quieted down a bit by then, their musical expression and popularity were still rising, and this album found them writing and playing very good, very grown-up-sounding songs.
The big hits off the album were "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Words"; other great tracks included the melodic cautionary tale "The Door Into Summer," the hypnotic "Love Is Only Sleeping" and the all-out psychedelic pop treat "Daily Nightly." With this album, the Monkees completely erased any previous stigma that they were not a real band.
