Black skin was also associated with a curse of hot climate in Smith's translation of the Bible, circa 1830, which describes a pre-deluge people called the "people of Canaan" (not to be confused with Canaan, the son of Ham, or the Biblical Canaanites), who were cursed because they fought against the "people of Shum."
As it became known that Mormons had begun preaching to the local Native Americans, the suspicions of Missouri citizens were raised that the large numbers of Mormons might begin tampering with their slaves, and voting Mormons would threaten their policies on people of color.
Phelps published an article in the church's newspaper, seeming to invite free fls into the state to become Mormons, and reflecting "in connection with the wonderful events of this age, much is doing towards abolishing slavery, and colonizing the fls, in Africa." ("Free Peoople of Color").

The Encyclopedia of Mormonism is a well-known semi-official encyclopedia for topics relevant to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church; see also "Mormon").
"Mormonism" is the most widely-understood name of the religion even though it's an unofficial term and sometimes even considered a slur.
No article of so-called Mormon historical revisionism is found in the Encyclopedia, which is unsurprising because after the Encyclopedia 's publication, several such scholars were excommunicated including some members of the 1993 "September Six".

I'm Black and a member of "the church" and it was very difficult en painfull.But I know that the gospel is true and people are stupid and sometime full of hate against Blacks.
I have friends in the church in the New York area (fl men who are college educated and in the church) They are not happy both are married to sisters (fl women who do not tolerate the church) although the missionaries are constantly trying to convert their wives.
So there you have it from the Lord's annointed: fls (negroes), and all other than white races, are born into their respective circumstances due to a less than desirable performance in the pre-existence.

A final factor not to be overlooked as influencing the 1849 Mormon decision to deny fls the priesthood was the intensification of Mormon antifl attitudes during the 1840s.
Because of his unusual status, Abel was the only known fl Mormon to fulfill not one but three missions for the Church: full-time missions in the 1830s and 1880s and a local mission in 1843.
