Blacksburg is dominated economically and demographically by the presence of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (better known as Virginia Tech), Virginia's largest university by land area and by full-time student population (among other measures).
Blacksburg, Virginia, was founded in 1798 on a thirty-eight acre tract laid out and deeded by William Black, for whom the town was named.
Blacksburg's age distribution is: 9.7% under the age of 18, 57.4% from 18 to 24, 18.9% from 25 to 44, 9.2% from 45 to 64, and 4.9% who are 65 years of age or older.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (also referred to as VPIandSU, VPI or most commonly Virginia Tech) is a public land-grant polytechnic university in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, with the largest full-time student population among universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Virginia Tech campus is located within Blacksburg; the central campus is roughly bordered by Prices Fork Road to the northwest, Plantation Drive to the west, Main Street to the east, and 460-bypass to the south, though it has several thousand acres beyond the central campus.
Virginia Tech's football team plays home games in Lane Stadium, considered one of the loudest stadiums in the country and recognized in 2005 by rivals.com as having the best homefield advantage in the country.
