The Blacktown railway station is an interconecting station for the Countrylink services between Dubbo and the country terminal in the Sydney CBD.It is also a bus interchange utilised by Westbus and Busways transport operaters providing connection to local suburbs not directly linked by rail.
Blacktown City recorded the eighth largest increase in resident population in Australia in the Intercensal Period (1991-1996) and the second largest in NSW with an increase of 20,548 persons, average annual growth rate of 1.9%.

Blacktown City Council, NSW's largest council, has contracted WSN Environmental Solutions to process more than 83,000 tonnes of waste each year, recovering recyclables, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning household garbage into green electricity and compost.
Blacktown City Council is the second Sydney council to sign up to the Eastern Creek AWT facility, joining Fairfield City Council that signed up in December 2003.

Prime Minister John Howard today announced Blacktown has been chosen to become a "solar city" as part of a major push to slash greenhouse gas emissions.
He said Blacktown had been chosen because of its young population and potential for expansion.
The regional director of BP Solar Australasia Mark Twidell said the Blacktown project would prevent 25,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions entering the atmosphere each year, equivalent to taking 6,000 cars off Sydney's roads.

The first Blacktown SES headquarters building was the original Blacktown Council Library building in Flushcomb Rd. In 1970 the Prospect County Council vacated their store and maintenance building in Campbell St and the SES moved into this building.
In 1992 Blacktown City Council received a grant from the Federal Government and constructed the present Headquarters building in Old Church Lane at Prospect.
In the mid seventies a Sub Local Headquarters was established at Pringle Rd, Hebersham and in 1991 the designation of this Headquarters was changed from a Sub Local to an SES Unit.
