	Blackwall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Blackwall is an area of the East End of London, situated in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
		It is perhaps most well-known for having given its name to the Blackwall Tunnel, which passes under the adjacent River Thames to north Greenwich.
		Blackwall is also the location of a fictitious fire-station featured in the ITV television series London's Burning.

		The construction of Blackwall tunnel in the 1890's brought further visitors to the area, both rich and poor.
		The construction of a second tunnel for Blackwall decimated a large amount of property and increasingly came to be used by heavy vehicles rather than the envisaged pedestrians and horse drawn vehicles of the earlier part of this century.
		Blackwall Pier (above) was the main embarkation point for most emigrants (whether voluntary or forced) and was in use right up to the 1930s.

		Blackwall Tunnel is a free road tunnel under the River Thames, between Blackwall Point in East Greenwich and East India Dock Road in Poplar.
		The same method was used at Blackwall, but the ground under the river bed was composed of sand rather than clay.
		The tunnel was in places only five feet six inches (1.67 metres) below the bed of the river, and the use of compressed air in the tunnel meant that sometimes the pressure was too much and the ceiling of the tunnel would give way.

		The London and Blackwall Railway began life as the Commercial Railway (Commercial Rd) but changed name when the line was allowed into Fenchurch St, it was more commonly known as the fourpenny rope due to its 4d fare.
		Two steam winding engines at either end one by the Blackwall terminus and the other at Minories a short distance east of Fechurch St station were the power source of the railway they pulled a 7 mile long rope, 5.75" in diameter and ran on 5' gauge tracks.
		From her on the line was doomed and was converted to standard gauge and the rope hauled railway ceased in 1849.

		The real problem I found was numpty car drivers not letting each other move lanes just before the tunnel - often seen them driving up the chevrons and forcing their way into the other lane of vehicles.
		Well Blackwall was closed this morning, I gave up and parked in Sainsbury’s then got a bus to the dome, jubilee line was actually running ok this morning!
		I used to have to drive from Blackheath to Canary Wharf via Blackwall, total distance about 5 miles, average time was about 45 minutes, although 1 hr 30mins wasnt unheard of.
