Blackwood convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Blackwood convention is a bidding convention in contract bridge that was developed by Easley Blackwood.
When this convention is in force, a bid of 4NT (No Trump) asks the partner to provide information on the number of aces in his or her hand.
Blackwood should not be used when the information gleaned will not answer the question that you need answered.

That was why Easley Blackwood invented his gadget: not to bid good slams but to avoid bad ones.
Although partner's response promises at least five hearts, it's too soon to raise the hearts, and a bid of three diamonds would be a "high reverse" and would promise much more than minimum strength.

When John Gerber presented his "4 club ace asking convention" to the bridge world, little did he know how often it would be misused and applied at the wrong times.
Because the use of 4 clubs is so important as either a natural or cue bid it is better in most cases to use Blackwood as the ace ask despite the fact Gerber is initiated at a lower level.
The goodwill engendered by this exchange inspired Perroux and his team to present their championship trophies to Gerber and the American team in what was described as the greatest act of sportsmanship in bridge history.

BLACKWOOD CONVENTION If the bidding has reached the 3 or 4 Level rapidly, and it seems that you and your partner together have such a strong hand that you may lose only one or no tricks, you should consider going for a slam.
GERBER CONVENTION The Gerber Convention is similar to the Blackwood Convention because its purpose is to ask your partner for the number of Aces he has before you possibly go for a slam.
The advantage of using the Gerber Convention instead of the Blackwood Convention is that the bidding starts lower, thus if the hand is not all that promising for a slam, you end the contract earlier.

CONVENTIONS I would like to explain on some basic things which unfortunately are forgotten by most of us.
There is one very important thing to remember that with every new convention you are trying to learn you have to forget some of your standard knowledge and your old playing habits because the new conventions won’t allow you to use those; they will contradict most of your old knowledge.
Although asking the opposition for explanation of their convention sometimes makes them wake up and saves them from a muddle as well, I believe you should still ask for explanation.
