So on one level there's the actual story with a few action-packed sequences but on a deeper, more relevant level there's the slowly evolving picture being painted of a future commercialised out-of-joint society where real people resort to transferring their hopes and ambitions to artificial animals cq.
As a conclusion: "Blade Runner" is possibly the best soundtrack album by Vangelis - the music, the movie and the ideas behind them certainly form another example of the many-levelness in which he revels.

Unlike Chariots of Fire's chart-topping soundtrack album success in 1981, at least twelve years expired before an official release of Blade Runner music was made available to the public.
The only gripe I have with the soundtrack is "One More Kiss Dear," a retro 50s song that plays around the middle of the CD and totally breaks off the gloomy tone of the tracks before it.
Besides this, themes such as "Rachels Song," "Damask Rose," "Blade Runner Blues," and the emotional "Tears in Rain" are pure masterpieces.

Blade Runner also happens to be one of the three all time great science fiction movies (Star Wars is not included in the list) and one of the best examples of using lighting in a film.

For those of us that were around in 1982, it was the only soundtrack available for this great movie and I bought it on cassette (remember those?!?) after seeing Blade Runner.
There is no denying that the orchestral version is not as good as the actual soundtrack but for some reason it was the only one released at the time.
If you're fanatical about Blade Runner it's probably worth the few quid it costs, even if for no other reason than curiosity (though a scratchy vinyl disk from the time might be what you really want).

Blade Runner, The Bounty, 1492 are all stellar works.
Being classically trained does not make one a better composer necessarily (if I were making a movie I'd probably hire Vangelis before I'd hire, say, Bill Conti) but Williams is *the* most sought-after composer in the film business.
And I think it would fair to say that Williams would have been more than capable of writing effective scores for Blade Runner, The Bounty and 1492, but I doubt very much that Vangelis could have as effectively served Superman or Raiders.
