Blades of Exile is whole new world of adventure for both the Windows 3.1/95 and Macintosh platforms, featuring not only several fascinating adventures, but a scenario generator you can use yourself!
Blades of Exile also comes with the Blades of Exile Scenario Editor, the long-awaited program which lets anyone create fully featured Exile scenarios, complete with custom monsters and graphics, dialogue, special encounters, and all the detail users have come to love in the Exile adventures.
Blades of Exile will be out for Macintosh in December 1997, and for Windows 3.1/95 in February, 1998.

Essentially this release entailed the same changes as Blades of Exile had compared to the original Exile Trilogy, it now was scenario based with the ability to create your own adventures using the editor.
Blades of Exile also had its own tab in the item menu for Special Items - a very nice feature that was (for some reason) moved into the Character Info screen in Blades of Avernum.
Blades of Exile did it right by having the tab for special items right by the tabs for character inventories, easily visible on the main screen.

 Blades of Avernum
Blades of Avernum changes that by giving you the ability to play in adventures others have created, as well as the ability to make your own adventures for others to play.
Blades of Avernum takes place in the same world of the Avernum trilogy, so, if you've played any of those games, you'll feel right at home.
Since there are dozens of Blades of Exile scenarios, there's a good chance of eventually having dozens of Blades of Avernum scenarios...the key word being eventually, since there is currently only one additional scenario at the Spiderweb Software Scenario Page.

If you've played Blades of Exile through, it might not be worthwhile to acquire Blades of Avernum (unless you wish to run the program in OS X or to have a drastically improved interface).
But then, Blades of Avernum makes no pretensions that it wants to have any of the above, and, when evaluated on its own terms, it is actually quite good.
Most importantly, and unlike many of its competitors, Blades of Avernum is not very taxing on either you or your computer.

I've always been a staunch supporter of the Vahnatai (I killed Erika in Exile III to stop her from dueling Rentar and the other Vahnatai), and Blades of Exile needs to have a different attitude towards them.
When you first download the demo of Blades of Exile ($30, Spiderweb Software), you will be able to play one of three included scenarios.
Blades of Exile is a 9/10 in my book, and I encourage anyone who values a good story to register and try it out.

Blades is small compared to the others in the Avernum series, and i wasn't able to complete all the Quests (not for lack of trying), but if you like quiet, turn-based games, you'll enjoy Blades.
