Blagoveshchensk (Russian (A native or inhabitant of Russia) : Благовещенск) (pop.
Founded in 1856 as a military outpost, Blagoveshchensk received its current name two years later after the parish church of Annunciation (Blagoveshchenie in Russian).
Today the two cities form a free-trade zone and it is mainly the cross-border trade that keeps Blagoveshchensk alive.

A river port and railroad hub on the Trans-Siberian RR, Blagoveshchensk is also an agricultural center and a supply point for the Zeya gold-mining basin.
Russian pioneers settled Blagoveshchensk in 1644, but the area was returned to China in 1689.
The city became a Russian army post in 1856.
