Blairgowrie and Rattray (Blairgowrie - likely Scottish Gaelic Blàr Ghobharaidh and Rattray - possibly from an English language cognate of Scottish Gaelic ràth, meaning fortress + a Pictish term cognate with Welsh tref, meaning settlement) is a burgh in Perth and Kinross, Scotland.
Rattray is on the east bank and Blairgowrie is on the west.
Blairgowrie is well known as a passing point for tourists and ski-ers.

According to tradition the Rattrays acquired their land from King Malcolm Canmore in the 11th century but the first record of the name is Sir Thomas of Rattray, who was knighted by Alexander III.
Sir John Rattray of Rattray was knighted by James IV and by his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of James 2nd Lord Kennedy, he had three sons and a daughter.
In 1745 the Chief of Rattray declined to join the Jacobites and sent a donation of £50 instead however his brother, John was physician to Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The name Rattray means "The Fort of the Hunter" which alludes to the ancient fort on a mound to the east of Rattray.
Blairgowrie grew from its 18th century village of 400 to be a busy industrial town of 4000 during the 19th century.
The castle is the seat of the chief of Clan Rattray and was built on the cliff edge shortly after the family lost their original castle, which stood on a great mound east of Rattray.

Capt James Silvester Rattray of Rattray, 29th Chief of the Clan Rattray, left Craighall Castle at Blairgowrie, with its 30 rooms, several years ago to live in a damp and dilapidated cottage in the castle grounds.
Capt Rattray, whose family tree can be traced back more than 900 years, said he had moved out of the castle because he wanted his son to have the use of it.
One of Capt Rattray's ancestors, Sir Silvester Rattray of the Ilk, sat in the old Scots parliament and was made ambassador to England in 1463.

On Wednesday 21st September the Blairgowrie Merchants Association hosted a "Meet and Greet" evening in the Royal Hotel for business people in the town who were either recently arrived or, for one reason or another, were not current members of the Association.
A vision for the future of Blairgowrie and East Perthshire is evolving, which would aim to make the town and its surrounding area a more attractive place for residents and visitors alike, and for those who work or shop in the area.
Blairgowrie is on track to have its new Tesco store in time for Christmas, with a proposed opening date of early December 2005, according to Mr Alasdair Campbell, the General Manager of the Blairgowrie Tesco store.

Earl Russell has condescended to accept an invitation to a banquet to be held in Blairgowrie and to receive another expression of the popular appreciation of the invaluable service he has rendered to his country.
At half past one o’clock on the 26th September 1863, a procession started from the Wellmeadow under the leadership of Capt. George Brown Anderson of the Rifle Volunteers of Blairgowrie and Rattray to meet him and bring him in honour to the town.
The procession was led by the Volunteers and their musical band, followed by the Masonic and Operatic Bodies of the place, and a coach containing Mr Thomas Stiven and his Councillor subordinates.

The meetings, organised by Kenneth Stewart (the Community Education Officer for Blairgowrie), were held on 17th June and 20th July to discuss the formation of the "Blairgowrie and District Hillwalking and Rambling Club".
The name Blairgowrie and District Hillwalking Club was chosen at this meeting and has remained the name of the club ever since.
