Blaise Castle is an 18th century mansion house and estate near Henbury in Bristol (formerly in Gloucestershire), England.
Blaise Castle was immortalised by being described as "the finest place in England" in Jane Austen's novel Northanger Abbey (a sentiment not necessarily shared by the author, however).
The castle and its 650 acres (2.6 km²) of parkland are now open to the public (the 'folly' opens most Sunday afternoons) and include a modern visiting facilities and car park.

The "official" attraction there is the Blaise Castle House, which has apparently been part of the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery since 1949.
Blaise Castle has had some bad publicity from people being attacked - only a few admittedly, but it is better to be careful, as anyone could hide in the woods.
It is a good idea to go to Blaise Castle early in the Summer, no later than 10am, or you will find it gets packed, especially if there is an event on.

This folly castle was built in the mid 1700's on the hill that was originally an iron age camp.
There is some connection to Jane Austen and the castle whether it was a direct connection or featured in her storyline, I'm not sure.

To many readers, Blaise Castle (or as Jane Austen wrote, Blaize Castle) would seem to be only a landmark which Catherine failed to visit.
It was not the derelict ruin that Catherine supposed, but a rather snug, neat, and small country house, built to look like a castle.
No doubt Catherine would have enjoyed the delightful grounds surrounding the castle, but one can’t help feeling she would have been very disappointed at the empty shell presented to her instead of the delightful ruins she imagined to be there.

There is an interesting story that I heard when I was at school about the tall building, Castle Gate, in the background of this photograph.
This was a tunnel that led from the castle to the outer defence ditch.
The way is now barred, but the nearby plaque explains that when this was being excavated the skeleton of monkey was discovered at the bottom of the steps.
