  The Films of Blake Edwards
Blake Edwards is the grandson of silent screen director J. Gordon Edwards, who made many of Theda Bara's films.
Edwards has superimposed the two here, so that the building of suspense in the dance sequence corresponds to suspense of watching the mysterious murderer execute another one of his crimes.
Edwards has done a lot of dramas in recent years, and his dramatic skills are just nowhere as good as his magnificent comic skills.

Blake Edwards is a moviemaker, usually associated with sophisticated, zany comedies, often scored by Henry Mancini.
In Marshal of Reno, Edwards acted alongside Gabby Hayes and 11-year-old Robert Blake, but the closest Edwards came to a starring role was in 1946, with Strangler of the Swamp.
In the late 1960s, as Edwards' marriage was dissolving and he was in psychotherapy, he commented in an interview that actress Julie Andrews "is so sweet she must have violets between her legs".

Edwards had written the screenplay for that film, although he did not fill that task on three of his early directorial successes: the Cary Grant classic, "Operation Petticoat" (1959); the exceptional "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961): and the more serious "The Days of Wine and Roses" (1963).
Edwards followed this with the biting satire of Hollywood, "S.O.B." (1981), most notable for Andrews first topless scene which finally laid to rest her saccharine screen image, and "Victor/Victoria" (1982), based on a 1933 German film about a woman pretending to be a man performing in drag.
Edwards had written and directed for radio, including "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" (NBC, 1949) which was revived for TV on ABC from 1950-52.

 TRIBUTE TO BLAKE EDWARDS
Edwards’ gender-bending 1982 comedy, VICTOR/VICTORIA, starring his second wife Julie Andrews as a woman who pretends to be a male transvestite, was a critical and box office hit, earning Blake French and Italian Best Picture honors and his only Oscar nomination (for best adapted screenplay).
Edwards and Andrews were only nodding acquaintances when Julie heard that Blake had speculated in public that her popular success was due to her having “lilacs for pubic hair.” A few weeks later she sent him a lilac plant—and for the past 34 Novembers she has given him lilacs for each of their wedding anniversaries.
Blake negotiated a three-picture deal with them, including “10” and S.O.B. FERRET disappeared down a development hole, but “10” was a critical and box office smash and S.O.B. (Edwards’ slap at Paramount over its treatment of DARLING LILI) appealed to a number of critics, moviegoers and awards bodies.

Edwards broke new ground with Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which was adapted from Truman Capote’s novel.
He is a great director, but not in the restrictive 'high' art sense of the term; his films blend both high and low by delving into the depths of the sordid while executing that depth with meticulous film artistry.
Even though Edwards is particularly expert at comedy, and takes old forms such as slapstick well into the modern era, not all of his films are comedies, for instance Days of Wine and Roses (1962), Wild Rovers (1971), and The Tamarind Seed (1974).
