Definition of Blakes Seven   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Blake's 7 resembled other BBC science fiction shows (such as Doctor Who), but was characterised by a darker tone and often defied the traditional sharply-defined ethical stances associated with this type of drama, with considerable blurring of the distinction between the "good" and the "bad" guys (and gals).
Blake's 7 was also remarkable for its range of influences; dialogue inspired by Casablanca and The Importance of Being Earnest was mixed with Spaghetti Western nihilism and pure camp, as well as the odd plot and a major character stolen from Shakespeare.
Blake's 7 was also arguably unique in TV SF in that it had a major influence on written SF, with the revival of written space opera in the '90s coming from (of all places) the UK at the hands of writers such as Stephen Baxter, Alastair Reynolds, and Iain Banks.

 Blakes Seven
Blake's Seven is an interesting piece of unpretentious Sci-Fi that typifies a lot of the genre.
The continuing implication in 'Blake's Seven' is that the Federation is as deluded as its ideological predecessors.
Nations, we know, are capable of suppressing individual liberties and the idea that a nation is sovereign works to ensure that a tyrant can rule indefinitely as long as he doesn't upset too many of his neighbours or get in the way of those corporations who have the ear of the US government.

 ToyBox | Blake's 7
Blake's 7 1979 Annual is a curious snapshot of the BBC's eyebrow-raising marketing of what was supposed to be an adult science fiction drama series.
It's even made clear, in the opening pages which introduce the characters to young readers, that some of Blake's crew are murderers, thieves, and embezzlers - this is fairly stout stuff for kids.
But in the 60-odd pages that follow that introduction, two things become clear: the short stories featuring Blake and company aren't intended to be even remotely gritty, and the people who put this book together had been given only the briefest of briefings on the characters and situations of Blake's 7.

However, Blake manages to start a revolt whilst on the prison ship carrying him and a fresh group of criminals to their life of servitude, ultimately escaping along with a small group of fellow prisoners aboard a technologically advanced, abandoned alien spaceship, which they dub The Liberator.
The character of Blake himself departed when Gareth Thomas opted to pursue other career avenues, to be replaced by the far less charismatic and interesting standard hero character of Mercenary Del Tarrent.
