Best known for creating and writing the sensational Soap, Susan Harris created The Golden Girls with a mission in mind: to dispel the hoary old myth that, in her own words, 'when you grow older you are no longer vital, attractive, sexy and smart'.
The series focused entirely on these four, this being the premise: a widowed Southern 'belle', Blanche, advertises for two new people to share her Miami Beach home, to provide company but, more importantly, to apportion the costs.
Blanche's initials spell out BED (her full name is Blanche Elizabeth Devereaux) and, truth is, she thinks of little else, with sex, not sleep, uppermost.
