Blancmange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blancmange originated in the Arab world where it is known as "mehallabiyyah" (gets eaten quickly, presumably because it is good) and reached medieval Europe through Sicily and Spain.
In the 16th century, a meatless version using cream, sugar and eggs was developed, and towards the end of the 17th century, a new kind of blancmange, a calf's foot or hartshorn jelly flavoured with almond and rosewater, and perhaps including milk, was introduced.
Blancmange puddings are commonplace in the U.K. and thus unexplained in the sketch.

Originally called L360, Blancmange received immediate recognition when they sent the song "Sad Day" to DJ Stevo, who added it to a compilation LP of then-unsigned new wave groups including future alternative icons like Depeche Mode and Soft Cell.
Later that year, Blancmange's debut album, Happy Families, sold well on the strength of their first Top Ten hit, "Living on the Ceiling," which peaked at number seven in Britain.
Blancmange's 1984 LP, Mange Tout, further established the group as one of Britain's most popular electronic artists; however, unlike many of their peers, the band weren't afraid of experimenting with real instruments, incorporating sitars, strings, woodwinds, and horns into their synthesized sound.

Blancmange got a push toward success in 1981, when one of their early tracks - "Sad Day" - appeared on the Some Bizarre indie compilation album.
Surrounded by such good company, Blancmange had a brief string of hits in the UK, their best chart showing being "Living On The Ceiling," from their debut album, at number seven.
It took until their second album, Mange Tout, for the States to take notice, and they had a couple of minor hits here, including "Don't Tell Me." The catchy, dance-oriented tunes such as "Don't Tell Me" for wich this early '80s singer/synth duo is known really belies the diversity of their music.

The release of this disc is something of a surprise to be honest - it's not as if there's a desperate shortage of Blancmange compilations, as both the Second Helpings compilation (especially the extended Canadian release) and the 1992 compilation Heaven Knows give good coverage of the band's output.
In fact, this new compilation means that there have now been as many Blancmange compilations as albums.
I'm not sure who'll buy it though - it's got just enough rare material on it to make it interesting to a small number of serious Blancmange fans but those who're rather less rabid about the group are unlikely to find it worth buying.

Anyway a quick search of Google Groups for the lyrics I could remember gave 24 hits, mainly news posts of people also trying to find out the name of the same song and group.
