Blancmange   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Blancmange, pronounced (also known informally as shape), is a jelly dessert made of milk and/or cream, sugar, gelatin or cornstarch, and flavouring (usually almond).
Blancmange originated in the Arab world where it is known as "mehallabiyyah" (gets eaten quickly, presumably because it is good) and reached medieval Europe through Sicily and Spain.
In the 16th century, a meatless version using cream, sugar and eggs was developed, and towards the end of the 17th century, a new kind of blancmange, a calf's foot or hartshorn jelly flavoured with almond and rosewater, and perhaps including milk, was introduced.

Blancmange got a push toward success in 1981, when one of their early tracks - "Sad Day" - appeared on the Some Bizarre indie compilation album.
The LP was put together largely by London band manager/eye for talent Stevo, and featured such little-known London talents as Depeche Mode, the The, B-Movie and Soft Cell.
Surrounded by such good company, Blancmange had a brief string of hits in the UK, their best chart showing being "Living On The Ceiling," from their debut album, at number seven.

Unfortunately, in the great explosion of talent, some very good bands were left behind in the frantic lunge for fame and fortune.
The personnel of the first group that you ever played in were usually the right people because, at that age, you were all of the same basic musical ability and nobody felt as though they were being held back by the others.
This was when the band started to play as a unit and not a set of individuals.

Eventually Blancmange faded away, but whenever I feel faintly lovelorn or need to grin 'The Day Before You Came' is something that I listen to.
I have a sinking feeling that the band didn't take themselves too seriously, which might be a good thing.
The songs aren't bad, anyway, and to someone who is a conspiracy/Illuminati nut the appeal of a band that keeps mentioning the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu is fairly clear.

This led to the band being signed by London Records and a synthesizer-based album, "Happy Families", which spawned two Top 10 singles, "Living On The Ceiling" and "Blind Vision", and a further two Top 40 entries with "Waves" and "That's Love, That It Is".
Ambitiously eclectic at times, Blancmange employed orchestration and raga influences on their second album, Mange Tout.
By 1985, the Blancmange experiment had effectively run its course and after a final album, Believe You Me, Luscombe and Arthur went their separate ways, with Luscombe joining the West India Company.

Blancmange's 1984 LP, Mange Tout, further established the group as one of Britain's most popular electronic artists; however, unlike many of their peers, the band weren't afraid of experimenting with real instruments, incorporating sitars, strings, woodwinds, and horns into their synthesized sound.
But Blancmange's third album, 1985's Believe You Me, was a flop.

The move from the independent label, Y Records, to a major, may well be the reason, in that working with a major, the musical as well as financial development of the band has been helped.
However, there are some bands that you have to admire for their passion and sincerity if for nothing else, like U2.

He was the guitarist for The Smiths, the most fêted British band of the era, "our Beatles" as the NME trumpeted years after the band split up.
Johnny was the coolest Smith, a true maestro of the six string, studied in his brilliance, magicing up gilded arpeggios while the lead singer pirouetted with a bunch of gladioli stuck down his arse (pocket) and a surly rhythm section pumped out a perfunctory background.
His plans for getting his own band together are well advanced but it's always seemed like he's happiest with a foil, whether it's the bloke from The Smiths, Hynde or Sumner.
