The Bland County area opened to White settlement after the French and Indian War, and it is likely that the Wolf Creek valley was cleared and put to the plow around 1770.
Those Indians were Shawnees, Miamis, Delawares, Wyandots, and Mingoes--none of whom had lived in the Bland County area in prehistoric times.
While bastions for defense are recorded for palisaded village sites in several areas of the eastern United States, the writer knows of only one instance of a special structure placed at overlapping gates to guard the entrance to a village, and this exception is reported for the Timucua Indians of Florida (Swanton, 1946, p.693).
