WAIHOPAI 2004: The Protests Continue, With Some New Twists
This was illustrated at 2003’s Waihopai protest in Blenheim when an estimated 200 local Blenheimites joined in the protest in Seymour Square and in a march through the city centre on a Saturday midday.
Although the public turnout was lower than at the 2003 protest, the numbers were sufficient for a spirited and colourful march through the central business district with plenty of chanting for peace to edify and distract the locals enjoying Blenheim’s sunny sidewalk café experience.
Murray Horton of the ABC focused the discussion on the nuts and bolts of Waihopai’s involvement, to the extent that we can know it given the blanket of secrecy that surrounds the activities of the GCSB.

Prisoners began to use blankets instead of clothing and the protest quickly became known as being 'on the blanket'.
The Maze was a unique prison establishment in that, with the exception of a small group of ordinary prisoners employed as kitchen workers, its population consisted entirely of prisoners who had been convicted of terrorist offences and who had claimed affiliation to paramilitary organisations.
From June 1972 convicted prisoners who claimed political motivation where granted what became known as 'special category status.' To be considered for special category status inmates had to have been convicted to serve more than nine months: in addition they had to be 'claimed' by one of the paramilitary compound leaders.
