Blantyre is a burgh in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Blantyre is the site for the infamous Blantyre mining disaster (1877), where 207 miners were killed when a coal mine exploded due to methane gas.
Blantyre's most famous son is the explorer and missionary David Livingstone, and there is a David Livingstone Centre at the bottom of Station Road.

South Lanarkshire (Siorrachd Lannraig a Deas in Gaelic) is one of 32 unitary council regions in Scotland, covering the southern part of the traditional county of Lanarkshire.
South Lanarkshire operates a cabinet style system, with key decisions being taken by the Executive Committee, under the leadership of the Council Leader, and approved by the council, led by the Provost.
South Lanarkshire shares borders with the unitary authorities of Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire, City of Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, West Lothian and Scottish Borders.

David Livingstone (March 19, 1813 – May 1, 1873) was a Scottish missionary and explorer of the Victorian era, now best remembered because of his meeting with Henry Morton Stanley which gave rise to the popular quotation, "Dr Livingstone, I presume.
