Blarina brevicauda, short-tailed shrew, one of twenty nine North American species, one of which is the smallest of all mammals.
Blarina scrambled into a turn and headed back down the corduroy rows to my shoe where it stopped and began to investigate.

C&EN: CRITTER CHEMISTRY - The Stunning Saliva Of Shrews
The toxin, called blarina toxin, is a glycoprotein found in the shrew’s lower salivary gland.
Uemura says blarina toxin may be able to lower blood pressure for the treatment of hypertension and Raynaud’s disease, a condition limiting blood circulation to the extremities.
Blarina toxin, for example, is a large protein and would be difficult to absorb through mouth tissues.

The population densities of the short-tailed shrew (Blarina brevicauda) are shown in Table 2.
Gottschang (1965) reported that the sex ratio of Blarina was very near 1:1 during the fall, as was the case in the East Prairie in the fall (Table 2).
Perhaps, then, the reason for the Blarina density on Grid III being nearly equal to that on Grid I in the fall of 1970 is that the moisture levels were nearly equal.

 Southern Short-tailed Shrew (Blarina carolinensis)
There is considerable evidence that Blarina stores snails for winter use.
An interesting feature of this shrew is the poison produced by the submaxillary glands, which is present in the saliva and may be introduced into wounds made by the teeth.
Injections of 6 mg of an extract prepared from the submaxillary gland are strong enough to kill mice but there is little likelihood of the venom having any serious effect on man.

The short-tailed shrew, known scientifically as Blarina, is about four inches long, and covered with silky, dense fur that can be brushed in either direction.
Blarina has a gland on each side of his body that produces a strong odor, so disagreeable that some predators won't eat him.
Blarina builds a spherical nest six to eight inches in diameter that incorporates dry grasses, shredded leaves, and, if available, rabbit hair.

Preliminary studies indicated that this was false, however; those findings did not apply to Sorex fumeus, which had very few pigmented enamel areas and was not included in the study.

Genetic variability with Blarina carolinensis, and among three sympatric species of shrews (Insectivora: Soricidae).
In a recent review of genetic variability of insectivores (Tolliver et al., 1985) no polymorphic loci were observed for the southern short-tailed shrew, Blarina carolinensis.
Results from this more extensive study are reported here, as well as estimates of genetic variability for two other species of shrews found on the SRP: the southeastern shrew, Sorex longirostris, and the least shrew, Cryptotis parva.

Food and ectoparasites of the southern short-tailed shrew, Blarina carolinensis (Mammalia: Soricidae), from South Carolina.
Food habitats and ectoparasites were examined in a sample of' 50 individuals of Blarina carolinensis collected in a hardwood forest on the Coastal Plain of western South Carolina.
carolinensis included one species of flea (Doratopsylla blarina), one species of beetle (Leptinus americanus), and 25 species of mites, the most frequent being Orycteroxenus soricis, Asiochirus blarina, Echinonyvvus blarinae, liaemogamasus liponyssoides, and several species of Pygmephorus.

Crude echolocating abilities have been documented in several species of shrews (e.g., Sorex cinereus, S. vagrans, Blarina brevicauda), red-backed voles (Clethrionomys sp.), and Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), but few quantitative experiments have been performed using modern ultrasonic sensors (Gould et al., 1964; Buchler, 1976; Tomasi, 1979).
