is a Labour Member of the European Parliament (first elected 1984) to represent the Durham and Blaydon European Constituency (comprising the Westminster constituencies of Bishop Auckland, Blaydon, Darlington, Easington, North Durham, North West Durham Sedgefield and Durham City).
He has served continuously since and was re-elected in June 2004 to represent the North East Region.
Stephen Hughes is a member of the GMB union and has, in the past, served as both Constituency Secretary and Election Agent on behalf of the Labour Party.

As the Blaydon defence was sucked in, the ball was moved wide, but Ella cut back inside when a pass to the supporting Simon Hepher would have been a better option.
Blaydon were deemed to have stopped the advancing maul illegally, and Lions were awarded a penalty 22 metres out.

Member for Blaydon, because I had a simple philosophical objection to much of what he said: the Government, rather than private sector companies, are responsible for the defence interests of this country.
Gentleman's analysis is correct with regard to his constituency facility, a heavy burden of responsibility rests not on the board of BAE Systems but on the Minister responsible for defence procurement.
Member for Blaydon might be right in saying that they did not do so; I am ready to accept that, as it would be an extraordinary trade union that came up with such a plan.

On Wednesday former constituency party treasurer Mr Dominic Blaydon said the main purpose of the account set up in February 1996 was to fund the General Election campaign but it was also to cover district and county council elections.
Mr Blaydon said he initially had control of the account but in October 1996 it was decided to transfer responsibility to Mr Whicher because as Mrs Jones's agent he would be legally responsible for the General Election expenses.
Mr Blaydon said if he had known of them and that they had come from Caledonian Mining he would have raised the matter with other party members because he knew the company chairman, Mr Colin MacLeod, had been a prominent local Tory.

My constituency is affected by that development, and I have received many representations from local people who are opposed to it.
I sit on the north-east tourism advisory board, and the last thing that County Durham needs is a succession of large holes across the county, which is something that we must consign to the past.
The knock-on effects on constituencies such as mine are not only the visible impact, nor the fact that it may give developers opportunities elsewhere across County Durham, but the increased traffic flow from the site that will no doubt find its way through the small communities of North Durham.

A group of us delivered 900 petition forms in the morning to houses in Whickham, in Blaydon constituency and we returned at 6pm to collect 190 completed forms, amounting to 320 signatures and a fair whack of new emails.

We have an interesting situation in Blaydon constituency of the Labour party putting out leaflets attacking.....themselves.
He cruised towards the Labour nomination on a sea of naff soundbites about how "working class" he was, how he had "gone to prison" in the 1980s during the miners' strike because of his politics, how he opposed the war and how he was very much against the New Labour project.
I wonder how his members back in Blaydon feel about him backing the war, foundation hospitals, ID cards and Blair plans for schools.

This constituency declared first in the last three elections and I think it will do so again.
Blaydon: McWilliam is retiring (I think) and the LibDems might be able to pull off an upset.
The seat is polarised between old pit villiages (like Blaydon itself) and affluent suburbs of Gateshead.
