Bleaker Island (5,115 acres) lies close to the southeastern coast of East Falkland.
Local knowledge suggests that rats have been on Bleaker for about 20 years and, in that time, the Expedition confirmed, they have spread to all extremities of the Island and at least three small islands offshore.
The eradication of the rats would have a long term beneficial effect for the breeding land birds on Bleaker Island.

After all had landed safely on Eagle Island a small boat was constructed from one of her damaged boats, and in it several crew members reached the River Plate (Riva de la Plata, east coast, Argentina).

One of the highlights might be our visit to Prion Island, where we will witness the breeding efforts of the huge Wandering Albatross and enjoy watching their displays.
The ring-shaped island is a huge volcano of which the crater opens into the sea, creating a natural harbour for the ship.

We got close to gentoos at Volunteer Point where they were 2 colonies, and on Bleaker Island, where there were 3 nesting areas.

Moving further south past the first ice bergs, HMS Endurance entered the pack ice and broke her way through to the Filchner Ice Shelf where she was joined by the British Antarctic Survey vessel Ernest Shackleton.
As Navy News went to press the ship was due to visit the remote island of Tristan Da Cunha where the Royal Navy has been helping to construct a new harbour after the old one was destroyed by lava flows from the volcano.
