 MSN Encarta - Episcopal Church
The doctrinal position of the church is, with certain modifications, the same as that of the Church of England.
At the same time, a noted clergyman from Connecticut, Samuel Seabury, had accepted consecration from nonjuring bishops of Scotland (1784), thus becoming the first bishop of Connecticut.
This permission was finally granted, and on February 4, 1787, bishops of the Church of England consecrated Provoost the first Episcopal bishop of New York, and William White the first of Pennsylvania.

Blessing of Same-Sex Unions : Key Themes: Maintaining Unity After General Synod
To separate feelings from ideas is probably not possible, but achieving a balance between the substance or "ideas" involved in the matter of blessing same-sex unions and the feelings that surround the blessing of same-sex unions is an issue that arose often in our focus groups.
Perhaps in response to some of the anxiety combined with a sense of urgent importance around the issue of blessing same-sex unions, many respondents commented on the need for a well-defined, highly structured, and transparent process through which the issue will be discussed at General Synod.
For all of the reasons noted throughout this document, the discussion of blessing same-sex unions will be difficult.

Report to the General Convention on the Blessing of Same-Sex Relations
Blessing a union without recognizing the vows "is to deny the validity of their relationship and commitment." To "honor love and commitment between persons of the same sex" is to honor those persons' vows of love and commitment.
Those who think same-sex unions are valuable and should in some way be "blessed" but that they are not and cannot properly be seen as "marriage." They call for some kind of rite that would honor the unions but maintain a difference from official marriage rites.
It states, "the necessity of two sexes is...not derived by any kind of logic." Quite apart from the issue of whether it might be derived by revelation, such a line of reasoning would leave little room for the church to question other forms of sexual configurations, such as polygamy and bisexual relationships.

The Lambeth Commission on Communion - Section D
Indeed, despite the statement of the Lambeth Conference in 1998 that it could not “advise the legitimising or blessing of same sex unions”, the conclusions of the Cadman Report was that this was not a matter of theology but of pastoral care, and competent of resolution at the diocesan level [96].
We urge all provinces that are engaged in processes of discernment regarding the blessing of same sex unions to engage the Communion in continuing study of biblical and theological rationale for and against such unions.
In the Canadian church, a process of discernment is underway to ascertain to what extent the blessing of same sex unions is a doctrinal matter, thus requiring, constitutionally, decisions at least at the national level.

It is ironic that just as the Presbyterian Church is voing on whether to prohibit clergy from participating in the blessing of same-sex unions, John Boswell's newest book, *Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe*, has been published, spreading more light.
What is most clear from the union ceremonies is that same-sex unions were based upon mutual love, while many of the heterosexual unions were based upon property rights, family alliances, doweries, etc. Hopefully they might lead to love later in the relationship.
What is most amazing are the examples of ceremonies of same-sex unions in their original language that bear historical proof of the relationships.

Section Three: Report on Same-Sex Unions
It is possible to view the idea of same sex blessings as a piece of a much larger whole, that of a catechumenal atmosphere within the entire congregation, where the church as a body nurture the growth of all its members throughout their lives.
Blessings for gay and lesbian people are of equal importance with blessings for heterosexual couples.
Not every parish is one with a tradition into which blessing a same-sex union would easily fit.

Augustine College What Would It Mean for the Church to Bless Same-Sex Unions?, by Edith Humphrey
The eucharistic blessing quoted above links the rite intended to solemnise same-sex erotic relations with the story of the holy God of Israel, with the Incarnation of Jesus from the virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit, and with the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church.
In the same way, the service itself is often "reserved", marking the rite as different from the long-established tradition of the wedding ceremony: so there is no declaration that the couple is joined; there is no statement about those whom "God has joined together"; there is no warning not to rend the relationship asunder.
To presume that God blesses such arrangements and to ask the Church to echo such a presumed blessing is perilous to those involved, and to the unity of the Church.

titusonenine » Episcopal Bishops Blessing Same Sex Unions
To say, as many have said, that all we did is JUST get a same-sex blessing but we didn\’t actually get married displays a woeful ignorance of the relationship between marriage and nuptial blessing and perhaps even a contempt for the whole notion of blessing as the Christian tradition has understood it.
Now that this chore is over with I would suggest that you do not want our church to call a same sex union a marriage and now you are upset by a bishop who believes that what he did was not a marriage, but a blessing.
Based on the same-sex blessings I\’ve read (and the promises associated therewith) it seems generally clear that the parties intend to enter into a relationship akin to marriage and are using language commensurate with that intent.

Anglican Journal -- New West synod to revisit blessing same-sex unions
Bishop Ingham, who supports the idea of blessing same-sex unions, said the issue "touches people's feelings at a deep level, a level not altogether rational." He added, "It's kind of a visceral issue and you can't reason people out of positions you haven't reasoned them into.
The diocese of New Westminster's annual synod this month will again consider whether to ask Bishop Michael Ingham to allow the blessing in church of committed homosexual relationships.
A blessing of a union is an opportunity for parents, the community, family and friends to thank God for what He has done in their lives," noted Steve Schuh, leader of the Vancouver chapter of Integrity, an organization of gay and lesbian Anglicans.

Same-sex unions: two sides of the issue
She says it can be a little lonely, being the only person on the commission who is opposed to the blessing of same-sex unions, but she believes someone has to speak up for the traditional side of this debate.
Co-chair Rev. Margaret Marquardt says the commission was created in response to a motion passed at the 1998 Lambeth Conference, which opposed the blessing of same-sex unions but encouraged Anglican churches to listen to their gay and lesbian members.
Partly because of her experience, Rev. McDonald insists the debate over same-sex unions does touch on core doctrine, despite the claims of those Anglicans who say it is a non-essential issue.

The Lutheran September 2000 What about same-sex unions?
Several clergy who supported the resolutions on blessing same-sex relationships are leaders of Reconciling in Christ congregations and synods that welcome and affirm gays and lesbians.
William Sullivan, pastor of St. Michael Lutheran Church, Ottawa Lake, Mich., says his synod's resolution is the "final straw." This decision, combined with the synod's support of full communion with the Episcopal Church, has the congregation looking for "a viable alternative to the ELCA," he says.
In fact, the bishops in 1993 said there was no scriptural basis for such a blessing.

Anglican delegates debate same-sex unions - The Washington Times: World - June 02, 2004
The proposal here would "affirm the authority and jurisdiction" of any diocese and its bishop "to authorize the blessing of committed same-sex unions." A companion bill would order preparation of denominational resources on same-sex blessings.
ST. CATHARINES, Ontario — Anglican Church of Canada delegates chose the most liberal of four candidates as their new national leader, and turned to a disputed proposal that would give dioceses the go-ahead to perform church blessing ceremonies for same-sex couples.
Asked whether his church will eventually accept blessings across the nation, Archbishop Hutchison responded, "I suspect that's true." But he is not sure he could support homosexual "marriage" in church, even though Canada's secular law has moved in that direction.

 C051 Liturgy/Music: Blessing of Committed Same-Gender Relationships
That, in our understanding of homosexual persons, differences exist among us about how best to care pastorally for those who intend to live in monogamous, non-celibate unions; and what is, or should be, required, permitted, or prohibited by the doctrine, discipline, and worship of The Episcopal Church concerning the blessing of the same.

Thus (b) people both in and outside of the church can reasonably conclude that these rites of blessing are themselves blessed by the church itself.

JS Online: Church debates same sex unions
"I believe that the arms of the ELCA are broad enough that we can allow (same sex unions) to happen in some of our churches," said the Rev. Herbert Chilstrom, one of two prominent officials asked to speak to a packed-room of church members with varying positions on homosexuality and same sex unions.
Jim Rustad, a 43-year-old computer programmer from Jackson, said he saw more weight in the argument that same sex unions are not supported by Scripture.
But the Rev. John Beem, who also spoke, argued that the Bible and years of scholarly Biblical interpretation do not show any support for the homosexual unions, and without that they should not be permitted.

 Majority Oppose Blessing Gay Unions
"If my local church blessed gay unions and [the decision] was not movable, I definitely would leave," said Sue Tegtmeier, 51, of Sumner, Iowa, who is a member of the Vineyard, an evangelical group.
Whitehead, the Episcopalian who opposed blessing ceremonies, is among those who would reluctantly continue to worship at their churches even if the priests conducted blessing ceremonies.
SO BROAD AND DEEP is this opposition that nearly half of all Americans who regularly attend worship services say they would leave their current church if their minister blessed gay couples-even if their denomination officially approved those ceremonies, the survey found.

 The St. Michael Report
The blessing of committed same-sex unions is tied to the question of how all sexuality, as a feature of our bodily existence, participates in our redemption – our entering into the life of holiness to which Christ, through his incarnation, his life, death and resurrection, is always calling us.
It is now for the Church to decide whether or not the blessing of same-sex unions is a faithful, Spirit-led development of Christian doctrine.
It is the view of the Commission that any proposed blessing of a same-sex relationship would be analogous to a marriage to such a degree as to require the church to understand it coherently in relation to the doctrine of marriage.
