Appendix Three: Roman Roads in Shropshire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Information on the Roman roads in Shropshire was needed to assist in the study of those ford place-names which could be explained because they lay on long-distance routes through the county.
From Bletchley through Tern Hill and Shakeford to High Heath, it coincided with the A41 trunk road and was known as "The Longford".
In discussing the period in the first century AD when Shropshire was assumed to be a frontier zone under the control of the Roman army, Dr Webster refers to the fort at Stretford bridge and postulates another road running from Salinae (Droitwich) to this fort, passing through the fort at Wall Town.

Bradford Hundred | British History Online
Bletchley did suit to the hundred in 1255 but is not known to have done so thereafter.
The personal status of the great landowners, and the imperceptible ways in which it was used to secure privilege, gradually ceased to suffice for the creation of liberties.
Privileges arrogated by or granted to such men and their heirs in the 13th century became attached to their estates and were allowed to their successors in the 14th, but by then royal charters were necessary for the acquisition of new franchises.

Roman Roads and Ford Place-names in Shropshire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
A study was carried out during the summer of 2000 of places in Shropshire whose place-name ended in the element '-ford'.In most cases, the name denotes the crossing of a road or track over a river or stream, though in some cases it refers to a causeway.
Since this crossing was the most notable feature of the place and the one from which the settlement took its name, it was decided to visit the sites and determine whether the associated crossing could be found.
From Bletchley through Tern Hill and Shakeford to High Heath (SJ 685 273), it coincided with the A41 trunk road.

Warring States Philology | Festival Calendar
Today we celebrate the insight that each of a set of problems constrains the solution of the others, and none of the separate problems may be soluble until they are seen as a single problem.
A E Housman (26 Mar 1859 - 30 Apr 1936) was the poet of the "Shropshire Lad," and a philologist with enough nerve to edit Manilius, a difficult text which had been earlier dealt with by no less a master than Scaliger, not to mention Bentley.
His great legacy to philology, however, is his sardonic essay from the year 1921, "The Application of Thought to Textual Criticism," in which he subjects to crisp but deserved scorn the fools and poopheads who would make of philology a mere gimmick, which yields correct answers simply by pulling on its lever.

The collision happened on the A41 dual carriageway at Bletchley, near Market Drayton, close to the Castle Hotel, and involved a blue Volkswagen Polo and a silver coloured Mercedes C270.
Shropshire Ambulance spokesman Steve Parry said paramedics were there within minutes but confirmed the woman, believed to be from north Shropshire, had died at the scene.
He said a second woman, in her 50s, and a man in his 60s, were both taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, in Telford, after they suffered shoulder and back injuries.

 BBC - Films - review - Enigma
Based on the bestselling novel by Robert Harris, "Enigma" is a superior period drama that pays tribute to the heroic cryptanalysts of Bletchley Park.
One involves Claire's sudden disappearance, the other is a race to crack the Germans' Enigma code before their subs make mincemeat of an Allied convoy crossing the Atlantic.
What can't be added to that list is the film's hurried and implausible conclusion, which whisks the viewer away from Bletchley to facilitate an unlikely action-packed climax.
