Blimpie, which operates about 1,600 restaurants in the United States and overseas, is a privately held company and is not required to make its books public.
Attorneys also accused Blimpie of reaching into a special advertising account to pay bills and eliminate "its growing operational and cash flow deficits." Franchise owners and subfranchisors contribute to the account, which is to be spent on marketing, according to the lawsuit.

I used to be a big fan of Blimpie's competition Subway, but I always found their bread to be soggy and too doughy to support all the veggies and cold cuts and dressings that Subway put on.
I find that the bread that Blimpie uses is not only more practical for these kind of sandwiches, but is also more tasty and holds up better throughout the entire eating experience.
The other thing I really like about Blimpie is that the cut the cold cuts in front of me, rather than just grabbing a handful of meat from a pre-existing pile.

 Howstuffworks "How Low-carbing Works"
Blimpie is a company that has -- for four decades -- been known for subs and sandwiches made with just-cut meat and cheese and vegetables on freshly baked bread.
But, for restaurants like Blimpie that know which side their bread is buttered on -- the sandwich side -- going solely for the salad seems to give their regular clientele short shrift.
So, the folks at Blimpie went straight to the heart of the problem by finding a low-carb bread to house the normal Blimpie fixings.

Blimpie craves gourmet diners - 2005-04-04
Blimpie International Inc. officials hope the across-the-board overhaul will give the Atlanta-based chain more of an upscale café look and attract new customers in search of something a little more gourmet than submarine sandwiches.
However, Blimpie already has a major presence in several top markets such as New York City, Atlanta, Phoenix and Hartford, Conn., and the new panini sandwiches, which cost $4.79, are aimed specifically at more affluent consumers willing to pay an extra buck or two for something different.
Blimpie's biggest challenge in going upstream may be attracting new customers from other gourmet sandwich shops without alienating current customers who are more interested in traditional sub sandwiches, said Tom Miner, principal with Chicago-based research firm Technomic Inc., which monitors the restaurant industry.
