The existence of an illusion effect when using such a device supports the idea of a visual perception provided by sensory substitution, whereas the attenuation of the vertical-horizontal illusion strength is consistent with the visual field shape theory (Künnapas, 1955a).
The absence of the illusion effect in early blind subjects suggests that the sensory experience influences the nature of perception and that the visual experience plays a crucial role in the vertical-horizontal illusion, in accordance with the size-constancy scaling theory (Gregory, 1963).
Blind (n = 6) and sighted blindfolded controls (n = 5) were scanned before and after they were trained to use their tongue in a Snellen orientation detection task.

 The Great Illusion (Blind Retrieves)
One or two dogs, sometimes more, will usually "line the blind." These dogs get a good initial line and run straight and true, with seeming disregard for the layout of terrain, cover, and water, all the way to the bird—which is likely to be 300 yards or more away.
Keeping the remainder of the blind simple accomplishes two things: it helps make the lesson as clear as possible, and it rewards the dog for staying with you through the hazard, by giving him a familiar task at which he can be successful.
Don’t be fooled by the illusion into disregarding the difficulties that terrain, wind, cover, and water pose for your dog—allow for him to be fallible, understand the challenges he faces, and he will give you the best he has to give.

BNR Metal Pages -- Blind Illusion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Blind Illusion was a legendary SF Bay Area metal band for years, going through many lineups and style changes prior to their first release (progressive rock among them).
The original lineup (formed around 1979) consisted of vocalist David Godfrey (later of Heathen), guitarist Mark Biedermann, bassist Alvin Petty, and drummer Bret Hern.
Currently he is living in northern California and amongst his projects are re-releasing The Sane Asylum, releasing the unreleased second album (The Medicine Show, apparently featuring Claypool and LaLonde), recording a third Blind Illusion album, and assorted other metal music projects.

 Blind Illusion - Metal
All of that introduction is necessary to show that while it might be easy to succeed in rock with a diminished melody whine for vocals and bouncy, "unexpected" rhythmic twists to your funk-influenced hard rock, metal is a different art.
Blind Illusion, as speed metal comparable to a Megadeth-Nuclear Assault hybrid that inherited too much Motorhead and Grand Funk Railroad, attempts metal that uses the devices of rock without ever finding its own voice.
Blind Illusion do less of this than they shift rock riffs into an advanced system of offbeats through selectively dropping down and repeating, speed metal style, a muffled chord, using the irregularity of that application in the bar to emphasize certain offtime matches.

 Recent Publications on Substitution Device
Using positron emission tomography with fluorodeoxyglucose, regional brain glucose metabolism was measured in the occipital cortex of early blind subjects and blindfolded controls who were trained to use this prosthesis.
The metabolic recruitment of the occipital cortex in early blind subjects using a substitution prosthesis could reflect a concurrent stimulation of functional cross-modal sensory connections.
Given the unfamiliarity of the task, it could be interpreted as a prolonged plasticity in the occipital cortex early deprived of visual afferences.

Blind Spot: ask your students to take a blank sheet of paper (provide some scratch paper for those in need), and place their open hand in the middle of the sheet.
However, this must be an illusion, since we have so much compelling evidence showing species arising from other species, and that even whole groups of organisms must have descended from other groups, and this over very long periods of time, i.e.
For that reason, people who practice the art of creating illusions professionally ("magicians" and "sleight of hand artists") are sometimes even better equipped to see through illusory phenomena, especially if they are intentional, as perpetrated by hoaxers and con artists.

 Blind spots
Because of this, you should have a "blind spot" (actually two, one for each eye), a place pretty much in the middle of what you can see where you can't see.
Maybe the blind spot for one eye is at a different place than the blind spot for the other (this is actually true), so you don't notice it because each eye sees what the other doesn't.
Alright, you say, that's kind of neat, but maybe the brain isn't "making it up." It just knows to put white where the blind spot is. Let's try another situation and see what happens.

Formed in late-'70s San Francisco by vocalist David Godfrey, guitarist Mike Biederman, bassist Alvin Petty, and drummer Brett Hern, Blind Illusion were for years one of the Bay Area's most popular underground metal bands.
Released the same year by English indie Music for Nations, The Sane Asylum was a quite unique, highly technical thrash metal album, but it ultimately got lost in the Bay Area thrash scene shuffle, and the bandmembers soon went their separate ways.
Rumor also has it that a second Blind Illusion album entitled The Medicine Show is in the can and awaiting release.

 Visual Illusions Gallery : Index
Illusions in visual perception occur when experiences, which people report, do not correspond to physical measurements of stimuli.
Humans would not have successfully adapted to survive and thrive in the environment of earth if there were not psychophysical correspondence between distal stimuli and most experiences.
Illusions are instances which lack correspondence and these instances can be very informative in helping us to understand how we are structured, how we function, and how we can best represent the world around us.

Blind Illusion : Sane Asylum - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
A secret supergroup of sorts, now best-known for once containing two-thirds of what would become Primus (those being guitarist Larry LaLonde and bassist Les Claypool), San Francisco's Blind Illusion had been active in one shape or another for nearly a decade before issuing their lone album, Sane Asylum, in 1988.
And, given the band's long history, one can better understand why their music certainly drank from the local scene's then-prevalent thrash metal fountain (see finger-bleeding workouts like "Vengeance Is Mine" and "Smash the Crystal"), but never fully subscribed to its rules.
If only these elements hadn't been stunted by a less than stellar production job, which replicates speed metal's ultra-compressed sound and nearly buries Claypool's trademark busy fingerwork in the process, the end result might have proved more powerful.
