Blind Melon - Tones of Home :: Biography
Listening back today, ‘Blind Melon’ is definitely one of the more ‘pure’ sounding rock records of the early ‘90s – modeled more after Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, rather than the usual suspects that all the grunge and industrial bands were studying at the time.
The grind of the road (Blind Melon toured for nearly two years solid) merged with the group’s sudden success proved to be a dangerous cocktail, as Hoon indulged in his drug of choice, cocaine.
Blind Melon’s self-titled debut is released on September 14, 1992.

There is truly not a bad track on the first album and it remains one of my favorites but this album is better and I expect years from now it will be recognized as one of the seminal works of the 90's and the album for which Shannon Hoon will be forever revered.
This was only their 2nd album written and you can already see them expanding their sound and still trying to find themselves individually and as a band.
As for the album itself it is much, much to darker than their self titled and couldn't have possibly seen equal success.

BLIND MELON puts a contemporary slant on metal, blues and assorted psychedelia without sounding lost in the past.
Sadly Blind Melon are very rarely spoken off especially this side of the pond due to many factors not least of all the untimely tragic death of lead singer Shannon Hoon, but this album speaks volumes of the man and the band they were.
But the early 90's was a rock revolution for sure, with seemingly every rock style getting some attention, and although 'Blind Melon' did, it wasn't nearly enough, because it was hastily overshadowed by a new generation that rejected what Blind Melon were preaching, for self-hatred and angst.

Blind Melon - Blind Melon - Music Reviews
Managing to be equally mellow and introspective as well as rough and rocking, Blind Melon's 1992 self-titled debut remains one of the most pure sounding rock albums of recent "time," completely devoid of '90s production tricks.
The most renowned song remains the uplifting hit "No Rain," but the whole album is superb -- the homesick rocker "Tones of Home," the desperate "I Wonder," the epic album closer, "Time," and the gentle acoustic strum of "Change," which included lyrics that turned out to be sadly prophetic for Hoon.
Blind Melon's self-titled debut was extremely out of place amongst the rampaging grunge scene, keeping pace with their classic rock icons.

Though considered by some to be one of the band's best albums, it was poorly received due to poor exposure, bad critical reviews, and Shannon Hoon's death at around the same time as the album's release.
However, there is some hope shining though the darkness in the album's subject matter, like in "New Life", shows Hoon hoping that the birth of his baby daughter, Nico Blue, will put his life back on track.
