Inside Dynamic HTML - Cross-Browser BLINK Element
This tag serves very little purpose and should almost never be used.
However, it turns out that Internet Explorer 4.0 and later parse and properly represent the blink tag in the object model as a container element.
This means that the contents of the BLINK tag are properly associated with the element itself.

The blink tag is used to draw your attention to something that needs attention to be paid to it.
However back in 1996 when the blink tag was first introduced people got overexcited and did stupid things with it which tarnished the blink tag almost beyond redemption.
The blink tag is the epitomy of evil.

The Real Paul Jones » Blink - the tag, the book
Blink (as I have mentioned here before) is the name of a new book by Malcolm Gladwell which has been widely reviewed and advertized — most recently on SlashDot where the comments are more interesting than the review itself (the purpose of a good Slashdot review is to generate comments ;->).
Blink, the book, which I have only flipped through but have read as it appeared in the form of articles in the New Yorker as Gladwell’s Tipping Point had appeared before it.
Like a blink, the book is fast, subtle, alluring to the right person, but mostly on the shiny unchallenging surface and without links to what is beneath it.

Web 2.1 server-side blink tag demonstration
That's right, instead of relying on the frustrating tag - which is non-standard and not compatible with all web browsers - blinking text can now be achieved in a fully standards-compliant manner.
The server-side blink tag works by using a timed AJAX request, to let a Web 2.1 compatible server update the client document so that the blinking text is turned invisible.
One work-around to this would be to use a high-capacity blink server farm.

<blink> tag in HTML is BAD!
I got a report from http://websitegarage.netscape.com that the HTML tag blink was proprietary to Netscape.
When Mark Andreesson (co-founder of Netscape Communications) was asked about the BLINK tag he said it was put in "as a joke." It only works in Netscape so you lose information with other browsers, and it is just plain annoying.
Blink is by far and without a doubt the most hated proprietary element ever created.

These tags, and possibly others, implement a feature that users may not want to be displayed in web pages.
If the ContentFilter were to remove the BLINK tag and all its contents up-to and including the /BLINK end tag, users would never see the important information.
For example, BLINK can be replaced with the B tag to display the associated text in a bold font instead of blinking.

tag drew their attention away from the content; some people even went so far as to cover those areas of the screen with their hands in order to coninute reading the web page.
tags could be also be used for this purpose, and they would have the advantage of being a very small, low-bandwidth way of doing so.
Of course, doing blinking or moving text using the same dom scripting that you're using for your agax server relayout would be just about as low-bandwidth as blink and remain standards compliant.

 The HTML Hell Page
This bastard cousin of the blink tag can cause vertigo and seizures in susceptible individuals, reducing them to exactly that state of drooling lobotomized idiocy that's such an essential prerequisite to purchasing Microsoft products.
The very next time we stumble across a page composed by somebody who thinks it's cool to use leaping flames or a big moire pattern or seven shades of hot pink swirly as a background, we swear we are going to reach right through the screen and rip out that festering puke's throat.
Anybody who use these tags for running text should be compressed by 30% themselves, slowly, and preferably in a machine with big nasty spikes.

And in regards to the all caps blinking paragraph, dude, if you can't see that it was rude then you should probably not be on the internets at all.
All caps, blinking and repeating the same phrase over and over, put together, is pretty much the textual equivalent of standing in the middle of the room screaming at the top of your lungs: You're trying to compel attention through overwhelming theatrics rather than rely on the validity of your arguments.
And considering how goddam easy it is to supress the blink tag, it's not even a very potent form of obnoxiousness.
