Blists Hill Museum, Madeley, is a beautifully reconstructed Victorian Town standing on the site of the former Blists Hill Works, a unique mining area from Madeley's industrial past.
One of the most fascinating features of the Blists Hill site is the Hay Inclined Plane, which was completed in 1793 and linked the upper canal system to the lower in Coalport.
By the 1950's Blists Hill was an industrial wasteland, but its regeneration as an open air museum has ensured its legacy lives on and that future generations can see how important Madeley and its parish was to the Industrial Revolution.

Blists Hill is a former industrial complex in Shropshire, UK, which has been converted into an open air museum that attempts to recreate a Shropshire town at the end of the 19th century.
In the 18th and 19th centuriues, Blists Hill was an industrial region consisting of a brick and tile works, blast furnaces and mineworks operated by the Madeley Wood Company.
Blists Hill Victorian Town, originally called Blists Hill Open Air Museum, was opened in 1973, and has been slowly growing ever since.

From the foot of the hill the canal was planned to run south through Coalbrookdale to the River Severn though there is no good evidence to prove that this part of the canal was ever constructed.
The main attraction is Blists Hill Open Air Museum which incorporates old furnaces, a stretch of the Shropshire Canal main line and the Hay Inclined Plane.
However, while Blists Hill Tunnel was under construction it was discovered that natural tar was oozing from the walls.

The purpose of the repair work was to restore and renovate the properties and structures to an acceptable condition whereby the ownership and future maintenance of the structures would pass into the care of lronbridge (Telford) Heritage Foundation.
In order to bring about the restoration and stabilisation of the Blists Hill Furnaces, it was necessary to undertake remedial work on the existing brickwork and stonework, together with the introduction of extensive ground anchors and tie bars.
The Bedlam Furnaces were owned by this company, which held mineral leases in Madeley Parish, enabling it to extract coal and iron ore. Upon its opening in 1790, the company had access to the Shropshire Canal, the Blists Hill section of which ran immediately to the east of the Blists Hill works site.

Blists Hill is a 50-acre open-air site within the Ironbridge complex which includes a reconstruction of town life a hundred years ago, with shops, printing works, offices, workshops, machinery, pigsties and railway sidings.
The site includes various items of industrial archaeology including the impressive remains of 19th century former blast furnaces (seen below), part of a canal, and an inclined plane (the Hay Incline of 1793,) which ingeniously enabled tub boats full of heavy goods e.g.coal, to be moved vertically between two sections of canal 1000 feet apart.
In the last quarter of the 18th century it was not so much the ironworks but one of their most spectacular products, the first iron bridge, which attracted visitors to the Severn Gorge.

Celebrating the year 1900, the streets of Blists Hill, near Ironbridge, Shropshire, were awash with colour over the May bank holiday 2005 as townsfolk decorated the streets with red, white and blue bunting in anticipation of Her Majesty’s special day.
Blists Hill’s policeman, Arthur Jarred, was never far away, riding around on his bicycle, keeping an eye on proceedings.

By now an annual event, the late May Bank Holiday saw 7 of us at Blists Hill taking on the role of Victorian townsfolk.
Monday started off OK with the odd shower but by the afternoon it was hail storms and the end of us being able to do anything useful.

Its a scorcher today as we travel to Ironbridge Gorge with temperatures reaching 30˚C. Ironbridge is located in the county of Shropshire near Telford, we reach it by leaving the M6 motorway at junction 12, then along the A5 towards Telford and then head south along the A442, it is signposted from this road.
We spend most of the day at the Blists Hill Victorian Town where there is something for everyone of every age, is one of the largest open air museums in Britain.
There was an entrance fee here, we purchased the 'Passport Tickets' which allow entrance to Blists Hill and many the other attractions in the Ironbridge Gorge area such as Enginuity, the Museum of the Gorge and Coalport China Museum.

Posted - 23 April 2006 : 6:46:34 PM Hehe, upon visiting for the third time to study the site thoroughly for my coursework, I discovered that is only a short stretch of canal, which is little more than a few hundred yards long, made to imitate the River Seven and the Iron Bridge!
I learnt about it in the letter I bought home from school for my parents, as it was a school trip, about 25 years ago.

We visited Blists Hill and the Museum of Iron, parts of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust.
The very large groups split into two with half going to Blists Hill in the morning and moving on to the Museum of Iron in the afternoon.

It felt like I had gone back in time, and in a way I had, this was Blists Hill Open air museum, a reconstructed Victorian village in Shropshire that was part of the Ironbridge Gorge museum.
They shops were fantastic, the best of course was the sweet shop, there was shelves full of jars of brightly coloured treats, liquorice, sherbet, toffee, and things I had never heard of.
We carried on down the hill, and bought some freshly baked rolls from the bakery, watched a carpenter at work, and then came to the bottom of the hill where we found my favourite part of all, the Victorian fairground.

The Madeley Wood Company was formed in 1756 when the Madley Wood Furnaces, also called Bedlam Furnaces, were built beside the River Severn, one mile west of Blists Hill.
After Joseph Reynolds decided to concentrate on his bank, the Madeley Wood Works passed to the Anstice family, one of whom had managed it, and their business became another Madley Wood Company.
