Blithfield Hall, Blithfield, 9X G Grandmother of the author, married Francis Kinnersley in 1601 Blithfield Hall remained with her brother, Walter Bagot, and was recently featured in the British Television programme "Open University" entitled 'The British Family: Sources and Myths' [May, 2000].
The Great Staircase at Blithfield Hall is shown here with a portrait of Elizabeth Cave, bride of Walter Bagot, holding a rose and painted just prior to her marriage to Walter c.
Bramhall Hall in Cheshire is considered by many to be the most beautiful building of its type in the district, being a fl and white structure of timber and magpie mortar.

"Blithfield parish is a fertile district, seven and a half miles S by W of Uttoxeter and four and a half miles N of Rugeley, comprising the hall, rectory and church of Blithfield, and the hamlets of Admaston, half a mile E of the church, and Newton, one mile NW of the church.
Blithfield and Admaston contain 1414 acres and Newton 1744 acres.
His Lordship resides at Blithfield Hall, an ancient mansion with embattled towers and walls, which gives it the air of a fortress.

Blithfield Hall, its buildings with turrets and battlements, with the main house joined by battlement walls and the turreted gateway is one of the oldest castles in England.
Blithfield is situated between the valleys of the two rivers, Blythe and Trent, lying in a hollow, but on high ground.
Blithfield Hall is within two miles of Abbot's Bromley.

As you may have noticed, the club burgee and signage is dominated by a depiction of a Goat and here is the reason: A unique herd of fl necked wild goats used to roam Bagot woods, and were kept in the grounds of Blithfield Hall, overlooking the reservoir.
Permission to use the Bagot Goat as the Blithfield emblem was kindly granted by Lady Nancy Bagot.

 Breed History
It is probably true that the Bagot Goat is among one of the oldest breeds of goats in Britain to-day, although usually one of the least known.
It is known from documentation that in 1710 for instance, the Hall had to reduce the number of goats on the estate in the interests of agriculture.
Around this time in 1957 the Blithfield goats fate was about to be sealed once and for all as the estate was sold and the goats had to go.

This is when it was introduced to Blithfield Hall in Staffordshire.
There are many stories as to how they got to Blithfield Hall, the most likely one which cannot be proved, but the most factual being, some goats were brought back to England by the returning crusaders.

 Brian Green - Puppeteer
After seeing the Lilliput Marionette Theatre at Walsall Town Hall and the Lanchesters, performing at the Theatre Royal in Birmingham, Brian decided that marionettes were the puppets for him and after more trips to the library, managed to put together a few marionette circus items which formed his first marionette show.
Several seasons were presented including Circus and Music Hall shows, but most notably a specially-written play "The Escape", dealing with an episode in the history of the Hall, with the voice of Mary Queen of Scots provided by Lady Bagot.
The Puppet Theatre at Blithfield came to an end when Lady Bagot re-married and the Hall would no longer be open to the public.

 BLITHFIELD, St Leonard
Blithfield Hall and St Leonard’s church date back to the thirteenth and fourteenth century - the Hall has been the property of the Bagot family since 1367.
Jennings believes that it was cast by Thomas Bett of Leicester, one time Mayor of Leicester, who bequeathed his business to his son-in-law Robert Newcombe.
He also suggests that a treble bell to augment the bells to four was cast by William Carter of London in 1610, supplied to Blithfield in 1635 and mysteriously ‘lost’ by 1707.

 Colton History Society - Village History in Staffordshire, England
Century this manor passed into the hands of the Bagot family of Blithfield Hall and remained with the family until well into the 20th.
His subsequent heirs built Bellamour Hall situated close to the road running from Rugeley and the remains of this Hall can still be seen today..
The second Hall was sold in the 1920’s and was demolished soon after.

Other houses of interest are Malt House Farm dating from the 16th Century; the remains of 17th Century Bellamour Hall as you enter the village; the original early 19th Century free school and also Boughey Hall Farm that can trace its history back to the 13th Century.
Previous to the erection of the present building the site is reputed to have originally been occupied by a roughly built timber house, in which resided a Saxon Lord, a man of considerable consequence, and lord of at least four different manors, including that of Colton.

The massive horns have been carbon dated back to 1,000 years ago, and are carried aloft by the dancers every Wakes Monday.
Six costumed men dance the horns around the village and its surrounding smallholdings - and before Lady Bagot at Blithfield Hall - stopping traffic in their wake and performing the dance scores of times.
Meanwhile, the jester bashes unsuspecting onlookers with his pig's bladder, which is supposed to bring fertility, and two accordion players keep the music going with delightful ease.
