The reservoir is a good place for seeing the swimming abilities of the stoat, which has been seen swimming across the feeder, across one of the feeding streams, at the edge of the reservoir and, once, fifty yards across one of the bays.
Of the swans the presence of mute swans at the reservoir became a rare occurrence after the mid-1970's and no doubt this decline was attributable to the considerable overall decline in the numbers of this species generally in the county from about that time.

A really easy find but in a great hiding place, the reservoir was quite choppy today with the wind and there were fallen branches all over the place.
It was very windy today and there were a couple of people windsurfing on the reservoir which must have been fantastic/terrifying depending on your point of view.
I have been to the reservoir in the past but this time in the middle of winter it was bleak.

In the pub on the second evening Gray and Eric commented that all these large fish were coming form 25 feet plus of water, which is unusual for Blithfield as a lot of the fish to date had been taken from 15 feet (shad rap depth!).

To begin with, we couldn't see much of the reservoir, as the footpath descended in front of the dam and followed the course of the river below it for a while.
I took photos and we continued to climb uphill slightly away from the reservoir and then across several fields to join a small lane down to the hamlet of Stockwell Heath.
This is just a small collection of houses around quite a large village pond, which would have been picuresque were it not clogged and choked with weed.

 Colton Village
Colton is a small village of around 700 inhabitants just over a mile north of Rugeley on the B5013 Uttoxeter Road which passes close to Abbots Bromley (of Horn Dance fame).
Between Colton and Abbots Bromley is Blithfield Reservoir, a storage reservoir for South Staffordshire Water.
It was officially opened by the Queen Mother in 1953 who travelled by train to Rugeley Trent Valley station in the Parish of Colton for the occasion.

It had been a couple of days since my last walk, and so I felt it was best if I did another walk (always a hardship, of course!).
I soon reached the northern end of the dam that holds in the waters of the large Blithefield Reservoir.
When the road curves to the left continue straight on down a track that leads towards the northern end of the dam of Blithefield Reservoir, rejoining the Staffordshire Way on route.
