BASIC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original BASIC language was designed in 1963 by John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz and implemented by a team of Dartmouth students under their direction.
BASIC was intended to address the complexity issues of older languages with a new language designed specifically for the new class of users the time-sharing systems allowed — that is, a "simpler" user who was not as interested in speed as in simply being able to use the machine.
BASIC also had the advantage that it was fairly well known to the young designers who took an interest in microcomputers at the time as a result of Kemeny and Kurtz's earlier proselytizing.

In English, blitz is also used as a verb, meaning to attack something rapidly, usually in a bathetic sense, as with 'nuke' or 'exterminate', i.e.
The term Blitz (literal translation: lightning) is used in the German language for "extraordinary": like "blitzschnell" for extraordinarily fast, "blitzsauber" for extraordinarily clean, "blitzgescheit" for extraordinarily smart.

The one major feature of Blitz, for me at least, was the ability to program for the Amiga environment and not purely the Amos environment.
While Blitz is definitely the superior language, this flexibility - as with any kind of flexibility - makes Blitz tougher to learn, and I wouldn't recommend it to any first time programmers.
This feature is missing in Blitz, but is probably because it is a compiled language and not an interpreted one, like Amos and QBasic.

I bought Blitz Basic 3D in December 2003 because I needed to convert one of my programs into 3D for a publishing company (more details to follow).
As it's name suggests Blitz is a BASIC (Beginner's All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) language and has similarities with other languages that I have used (Commodore Basic, AMOS, AMOS Pro and to some extent Visual Basic).
One of the problems with Blitz Basic is that it doesn't have native support for "double" floating point numbers and so the amount of time that you can zoom into each Fractal type is limited.

Blitz Basic 2 (aka Blitz 2, aka Blitz) is a BASIC programming language, written by Acid Software, for the Amiga computer.
Blitz the language supports all versions of the Amiga Operating System, from 1.2 to 3.9, both in the programs it creates and the programs which make up the Blitz package.
However, newer versions of some Blitz programs require newer versions of the OS, and some 3rd party libraries that you can use in your programs will also require newer versions (thus making your program require a newer version of the OS).

On the other hand, separation of all languages to their own specific group would seem to be too much and the volume of most of these groups would be low.
Here are some numbers: list/group average messages/day lately comp.sys.amiga.programmer 50 ace-list (ACE basic) 5-15 amos-list (AMOS basic) 13 blitz-list (Blitz basic) 5 These are not the only basics for Amiga, but should be to my knowledge the most used ones.
I would also like to clearly point out, that this group isn't suggested so much as a split of comp.sys.amiga.programmer but because there is a need for co-operative group for basic programmers and directing the traffic to some existing group would surely irriate it's current users as summarized traffic is quite high and growing.
