The population decline of bloaters in recent decades was mainly attributed to exploitation, to the depression of chub recruitment by nonendemic alewives and rainbow smelt, and to complications arising from extreme female predominance.
Bloaters now shift from pelagic zooplanktivory to benthic habitats and diets and least two years earlier in their life history than they did before alewife became abundant.
