The Blob DVD review on AudioRevolution.com
Back in 1958, every major comic made jokes about 'The Blob,' both for its naked title and the irreducible simplicity of its monster: a glob of protoplasm that moves, devours people, and grows -- and that's it.
One of the bright surprises of the commentary tracks of this outstanding Criterion Collection release is that the filmmakers wanted comics to make jokes about their movie -- and that that is precisely the reason they chose the title they did.
In 'The Blob,' a meteor lands from space; an old man (Olin Howlin) finds within it a glob of amorphous material (mostly played by a gallon or so of silicone) that adheres to his hand, and starts dissolving it.

UGO.com Film/TV - The Blob - Twice Scared: UGO's Guide to Horror Remakes
The Blob is a delight - and a rarity - in the horror film community, as it is a horror film that really isn't about anything at all other than, well, a giant blob rolling around and devouring people.
The Blob '88 is an even better film, and played with that straight-faced but naive earnestness that was a trademark of so many '80s films, sci-fi/horror or otherwise.
Both Blobs are ultimately disposable in the sci-fi/horror genre, but they are solid (ha ha) pieces of entertainment nonetheless.

What's New at AC Comics | First Look At DVDs
Of great interest on several fronts, as it was one of the last serials to be released, it also combined both the masked hero and the Western genres and starred an actor (Ken Curtis) who would later play a regular supporting role in one of the longest-running series in TV history, Gunsmoke.
In tone, it is a cross between the low-budget sci-fi and horror films of the 1950s and the live-action superhero television shows of the 1960s, with a dash of 1940s style movie serial thrown in, and finished out using today's CGI technology.
Its success spawned a Nyoka comic book that initially ran for almost fifteen years straight, first from Fawcett, then Charlton — and even revived in the 1990s when AC Comics bought the character, and brought back yet again (in comic book form) from AC this last summer.
