Bloc Québécois - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because the opposition vote in the rest of Canada was split between the Reform Party, the PC Party and the New Democratic Party, the Bloc narrowly won the second largest number of seats in the Canadian House of Commons, and therefore became the official opposition.
The 1997-2000 term was marked by the Bloc's fight against the passing of Bill C-20, engineered by Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and Stéphane Dion, a Quebec minister in Chretien's cabinet.
The current Bloc leader, Gilles Duceppe, is also the son of Jean Duceppe, a famous Quebec actor who helped found the PQ and the Quebec NDP.

 uni.ca - BQ 2000 Programme
The Bloc Québécois is convinced that citizens' trust in their representatives will be enhanced through a new balance enabling elected members to more freely express the expectations of their voters or their moral values as they relate to the orientations of the party which they also represent.
The Bloc Québécois undertakes to consult the social players in Québec, including international cooperation organizations, and to take action to ensure that the Canadian government's proposals in these international or continental negotiations are presented to the public and that the debates are conducted on these major issues.
The Bloc Québécois is not the only group involved, but it must assume its own responsibility for occupying the federal ground, its policies and debates, so that Québec's interests are constantly defended, and the Bloc must do this in a visible manner in every riding in Québec in order to neutralize the federal propaganda machine.

Former Parti Quebecois MP and leader of the right-wing Union Nationale, Rodrigue Biron, had taken part, with the blessing of Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard, in a United Alternative steering committee, the first shot at uniting the Tory party and the Reform Party (predecessor of the Alliance) in a single organization of the Canadian right.
A coalition between the Bloc Quebecois and the Canadian Alliance is far from being “unnatural.” Rather, it would reveal the reactionary essence of the nationalist project and represent another stage in the long collaboration between the Canadian right and Quebec nationalists.

The Bloc, as could be expected from a party that known its glory hours while fighting to separate Québec from Canada, often severely criticizes the encroachments of the federal government in provincial jurisdictions and thus seeks to protect the autonomy of the National Assembly of Québec.
The Bloc is currently banking on the "record prices" of gas to lead an intense campaign in favour of another federal intervention: the creation of a surveillance board for the petroleum sector.
In fact, the Bloc itself said in 1996 that the federal government was encroaching on provincial jurisdiction by banning the MMT additive in petroleum and was thus putting into jeopardy the survival of two Montreal refineries.

Canada Election 2004 Voter Guide: Political Parties - Bloc Québécois
The Bloc Québécois (also known as the "BQ" or the "Bloc") is a federal political party, though it runs candidates only in the federal electoral districts of Quebec.
Its members and supporters come from a broad spectrum of political orientations by the party's central purpose: to promote the secession of Quebec from Canada or, when the desire of Quebecers for secession is weak, to promote the "interests" of Quebec.
Comprised at the time of Progressive Conservative ("PC") and Liberal party members who left those parties to form the Bloc, the party's first leader was former PC cabinet minister Lucienne Bouchard.
