		An extensive high-resolution, seismic-reflection survey was conducted in Block Island Sound (Figure 1) by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the State of Connecticut Geological and Natural History Survey, Department of Environmental Protection (D.E.P.), to determine the stratigraphic framework and Quaternary history of the sound.
		The bedrock and coastal-plain strata are unconformably overlain by glacial drift.
		Block Island, Fishers Island, and Long Island are capped by two glacial drift sheets representing two ice advances, one of late Wisconsinan age and one that predates the late Wisconsinan (Donner, 1964; Sirkin 1971, 1976, 1982; Mills and Wells, 1974).

		Block Island continued to be perilous until Nicholas Ball campaigned to improve the aids to navigation around Block Island.
		On July 27, 1992, Block Island Southeast Light was transferred from the Coast Guard to the Southeast Lighthouse Foundation of New Shoreham, Rhode Island for maintaining and preserving the lighthouse.

	BIRA survey: Block Island residents sound off
		Block Island Residents Association sent out a questionnaire in the spring of 2003 that asked island residents about their quality of life.
		The survey confirms that a majority of Block Island residents ride a bicycle on Block Island, with 83 percent of younger respondents, and even 60 percent of the 51+ age group saying they did.
		Although the survey did not reveal overall pet ownership on Block Island, the results did inform us that over half of the 18-to-50 age group, 52 percent to be exact, have dogs on Block Island as compared to 34 percent for the 51+ age group.
