Block cipher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In cryptography, a block cipher is a symmetric key cipher which operates on fixed-length groups of bits, termed blocks, with an unvarying transformation.
Block ciphers can be contrasted with stream ciphers; a stream cipher operates on individual digits one at a time, and the transformation varies during the encryption.
DES was designed, among other things, to resist a certain cryptanalytic attack known to the NSA and rediscovered by IBM, though unknown publicly until rediscovered again and published by Eli Biham and Adi Shamir in the late 1980s.

The Omni Block Advantage - Thermal Performance
Omni Block’s exterior wall system utilizes age-old proven concepts such as thermal mass (the adobe principle), thermal lag and thermal damping and combines them with a unique block design and foam insulation.
Omni Block utilizes thermal mass principles that keeps interior radiant surface temperatures moderate, insulation, an extended thermal path (resulting in thermal lag), damping, airtightness and a unique window-to-block connection (see Installation Process) to successfully accomplish energy efficiency for the entire wall envelope.
Since Omni Block walls are not covered-up (furred-out and drywalled) there is a tremendous amount of thermal mass exposed to the interior of the building.

A balanced incomplete block design D(b,v,k,r,l) is an arrangement of v distinct objects into b blocks such that each block contains exactly k distinct objects, each object occurs in exactly r different blocks, and every pair of distinct objects occurs in exactly l blocks.
Derived design and residual design block designs are based on symmetric designs but do not appear to be Perfect-N because they fail to satisfy the requirement that r = nk.

The randomized block design is used to reduce the amount of experimental error and/or to explore the effects of the experimental variable on levels of some organismic variable.
Blocks are formed on the basis of the control variable--which may take the form of intellectual aptitude, social class, gender, age, etc. For example, an experiment comparing three different teaching methods with ninety subjects, might first order the subjects according to academic ability as measured by some test.
In summary, the randomized block design is created by forming blocks of individuals that are alike with respect to the control condition, and the individulas within a block are then distributed at random across the treatment conditions, thus creating a two-way analysis of variance.

Randomized Block Designs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The Randomized Block Design is research design's equivalent to stratified random sampling.
Like stratified sampling, randomized block designs are constructed to reduce noise or variance in the data (see Classifying the Experimental Designs).
If the blocks weren't homogeneous -- their variability was as large as the entire sample's -- we would actually get worse estimates than in the simple randomized experimental case.

A design can be placed into a LogicLock region and then performance-critical parts of the design hierarchy can be further constrained to a smaller child region to improve performance.
Altera Stratix™ II & Stratix devices include continuous routing lines to support and enhance the LogicLock block-based design methodology. This technology ensures that the same routing and clocking resources are available to a predefined design block regardless of where it is placed within a device to enable fast, deterministic performance.
Deterministic performance allows designers to use the LogicLock incremental design methodology to develop intellectual property (IP) libraries of data processing and I/O functions that can be easily reused in any future project using Altera Stratix II and Stratix devices.

 Joseph Malkevitch: Block Design Tidbit
Another source of interest in block designs was to try to extend geometric ideas from the infinite geometries of Euclid, the sphere (real projective geometry), and Bolyai and Lobachevsky to finite analogs of these geometries.
One early result on block designs was proven by the British statistician and mathematician R. Fisher, and is often referred to as Fisher's inequality.
When a block design has the property that one can partition the set of blocks into classes, known as parallel classes, each of which partitions the set V of points, then the block design is called resolvable.
