blockhead himself had no musical training, apart from a couple of weeks of clarinet in third grade.

Blockhead: Music by Cavelight: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
In the case of Blockhead and Def Jux emcee Aesop Rock, their names were seemingly attached to each other's achievements almost immediately.
Far from experimental, Blockhead is a new breed of hard-edge traditionalist with few frills and a serious ear for samples.
All around, Blockhead's first foray into solo sound collage is far from bad, but it rarely steals the show the way his rapper-associated work tends to.

 Blockhead - Music By Cavelight
Blockhead's solo debut answers the question I didn't pose, for his instrumental work paints in the same shades of grey as his past material – but contains a few stylistic shifts that require discussion before we consider whether the fabrics of his productions, without vocal patterns, are interesting enough to stand alone.
The drums of Music By Cavelight provide an unobtrusive, solid hiphop-based structure for his samples – a structure which prevents their nuances from dwindling to a subconscious hum.
While it might seem trite to complain about any music nowadays being devoid of soul or a genuine commentary, that is a lacking I can come to terms with.

 Blockhead - Music by Cavelight

 * Dusted Reviews - Blockhead *
Blockhead is probably best known for his excellent and unconventional production on Aesop Rock's Labor Days (has the bassoon ever been used so convincingly on a hip hop record?).
Whether the real feat was the album's thematic and atmospheric structure or the figure-ground relationship of hyperliterate rhymes and baroque backdrops, it worked on a level that remains unsurpassed by either collaborator.
Blockhead's solo debut Music By Cavelight may well (and deservingly) move him out of Aesop's shadow into the luminous underworld of instrumental hip hop, but it's not as interesting as it could and probably should be.

 Blockhead - Music By Cavelight
Music By Cavelight sums up this album perfectly, as does the cover photo - music that is predominantly shade, but not oppressively so as it is punctuated by shafts of light from the quirkiness of the samples and instrumental arrangements.
Blockhead is a New Yorker, a fan of hip-hop who had a brief career as a rapper but discovered he was more at home producing the music.
Blockhead can also do a nice bit of psychedelia as illustrated on Breathe And Start, with its rapidly changing moods, piano trading off with muted trumpet, and the final title track uses a violin line, probably of Eastern origin, to spice things up.

Impressive LP Before Music By Cavelight, the only real exposure I had to Blockhead was the production work he did on Aesop Rock's Float release, which I am a huge fan of.
Blockhead's employment of jazz samples is indeed well tailored, and I was impressed at how the tracks build up to the Triptych trilogy which seem to bridge the first and second halfs of the album rather nicely (especially part two).
unlike most hot shot producers of today, blockhead clearly is from the true school of hip hop and understands that to make a bangin' beat you don't need expensive records to sample or a million dollar studio, all you need are crisp well programmed drums, slick and groovalicious basslines and well placed, tweaked samples.

 BLOCKHEAD Music By Cavelight
Music By Cavelight is a much more subtle and straightforward affair than his previous work could have led to think.
The mood is laidback all the way through, with Blockhead injecting a wide range of cinematic samples into his instrumentals, altering the mood at will, yet remaining consistent.
Music By Cavelight is in part a bit forgettable though.

Blockhead notes that, “by the time Music By Cavelight dropped I was already somewhere else musically, the overall progression is a more complete sound.”

Music By Cavelight, however, is not simple a collection of beats that lack a vocalist.

And yet as brash as things can become, there is also an inherent sadness to some of his music, most notable in the tear-stained piano keys of tracks such as Sunday Seance or Triptych, Part 1, which wrap you up in their melancholy beauty.
It is here that Blockhead, quite possibly, transcends the hip-hop genre, reaching out into far wider territory, and taking his listeners on the journey with him, during which he also gets to flex his creative muscles.
Blockhead isn't afraid to speed up a vocal or two, a la Wu Tang, and then slows it down to create a series of choral effects throughout his Triptych epic, while simultaneously keeping the beats crisp, hard and rock steady.

BLOCKHEAD, aka Tony Simon, first came to our attention with his excellent debut, Music By Cavelight, the critically-acclaimed album that boasted such fine cuts as Insomniac Olympics and Sunday Seance.
Needless to say, Blockhead's own brand of emotional instrumental hip hop is perfectly suited to capturing the vibrancy and edginess of one of NYC's best-loved districts.
If the rest of the album fails to measure up entirely, there is still plenty of atmospheric mood music to get you thinking, or have you reflecting on any time spent in one of the greatest cities in the world.

Later in life Nietzsche addressed Cosima Wagner as "Princess Ariadne" in his letters to her and declared that the author of them is the god Dionysus.
Nietzsche called the composer "Old Minotaur." In History of Western Philosophy, Bertrand Russell remarked: "Nietzsche's superman is very like Siegfried, except that he knows Greek."
