Topic: Blocks world

Blocks world - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The blocks world is one of the most famous planning domains in artificial intelligence.
The catch is that only one block may be moved at a time: it may be either placed on the table or placed atop another block.
The simplicity of this toy world lends itself readily to symbolic or classical A.I. approaches, in which the world is modelled as a set of abstract symbols which may be reasoned about.

 Urea blocks
Blocks formed in metal moulds were removed immediately from the moulds and those made in small plastic moulds were removed after 16 to 24 hours.
Ten percent cement in the blocks without poultry litter gave satisfactory results (formula 2, Table 1) whereas, with poultry litter, the block was of medium H and C. Increasing the level of cement (Table 1, formula 5) to 15% gave good blocks even in the presence of litter.
Blocks can be made using a variety of agricultural by-products and animal wastes; the choice of ingredients should be made according to their availability, nutritional value, ease of handling and their overall effect on the quality of the block.

Tower block - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tower block, block of flats, or apartment block, is a multi-unit high-rise apartment building.
Tower blocks were first built in the UK after the Second World War, in many cases as a "quick-fix" to cure problems caused by crumbling and unsanitary 19th century dwellings or to replace buildings destroyed by aerial bombing.
In the United States tower blocks are commonly referred to as midrise or highrise apartment buildings, depending on their height, while buildings that house fewer flats (apartments), or are not as tall as the tower blocks, are called lowrise apartment buildings.

 The Blocks Problem
where a and b are block numbers, puts block a onto the top of the stack containing block b, after returning any blocks that are stacked on top of block a to their initial positions.
All blocks on top of block b are moved to their initial positions prior to the pile taking place.
If there is at least a block on it, the colon must be followed by one space, followed by a list of blocks that appear stacked in that position with each block number separated from other block numbers by a space.

For example, to use means-ends analysis, it is useful to generate operators based on the goal, such as operators to move block B on top of block C. *Apply an operator to transform a state.* TK6: The operator that moves a block changes two characteristics of the state.
The block that was moved is no longer on top of the object that was supporting it (namely, another block or the table), and it is now on top of either another block or the table.
SK2: If there are two operators that move blocks into their desired position in the same tower, prefer the operator whose block in the desired state is lower in the tower.

 Actions in the Blocks World
We choose to model four types of action in the blocks world, all performed by the robot gripper: grasping a block, picking up a block, putting a block down onto another, and putting a block down onto the table.
The post-condition of an action is traditionally split into two separate structures: the add-set, holding those literals made true by the effect of the action, and the delete-set, holding only those literals made false by the effect of the action.
The actions moving the other blocks b,c,d can all be written in exactly the same form, giving a total of 36 action instances (4 grasp's, 4 liftup's from the table, 4 putdown's onto the table, 12 putdown's between blocks and 12 liftup's between blocks).

CogSci 108b: The Blocks-World Problem Solver
The location where the block is to be moved might already have blocks on it, and those blocks need to be moved elsewhere.
Putting a block down on another one is fairly simple, as the problem solver has already made sure that there is room for the grasped block.
It is given two blocks: the first is the block to be moved, and the second is the block to be moved.

 SATLIB - Benchmark Problems
Given an initial and a goal configuration of blocks, the problem is to find a sequence of operators which, when applied to the initial configuration, leads to the goal situation.
Blocks can only be moved when they are clear, i.e., no other block is piled on top of them, and they can be only moved on top of blocks which are clear or onto the table.
There is an optimisation and a decision variant of the Blocks World Planning problem: In the optimisation variant, the goal is to find a shortest plan, whereas in the decision variant, the question is to decide whether a plan of a given length exists.

 All About Blocks
Little wonder that the block area is where math, science, literacy, and social skills come alive in a variety of fun, yet meaningful learning experiences.
Another reason blocks provide such a language-rich environment is because of the pretend play that often goes along with them.
Preschoolers are wonderful at using simple blocks to represent characters, or to create a set so that they can recreate a favorite story or experience (going to the beach with mom and dad) over and over again.

 4.3 Blocks World
We implemented a classical Blocks World domain with the two operators in Figure 2.
However, it is trivial to generate a correct, but suboptimal, plan in linear time using the naive algorithm: put all blocks on the table and build the desired towers from the bottom up.
This planner is a programmatic implementation of the naive algorithm using the facilities introduced in Section 3.4.2.

The truth about the Minus World is that it DOES exist, and it is accessed by the method described by fellow Canadian Dave Standish earlier.

Proposal of the initial state   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
For subgoals that are applying an operator, the initial state is usually either the same as the superstate (the state to which the operator was being applied), or it is a new state with a pointer back to the superstate.
Below is an example for the Blocks World where the same state is used.
As a convention, the attribute ^superstate is used for superstates and ^io-state is used for the top state in which all input and output is performed.

Blackboard Building Blocks is a free framework for developing external applications and "hooking" them directly into Blackboard.
Blackboard Building Blocks allows third-party vendors, developers, and institutions to use the Blackboard platform to build new applications, extend existing technologies, and integrate them into external (back-office) systems.
Utilizing the numerous objects and methods exposed via the Building Blocks API's, these applications and tools extend the Blackboard platform in areas such as content management, instant messaging, and handheld support.

Assignment 1: Blocks World Planning Problem   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
For example, when you want to move block b from the top of x to the top of block y, b has to be on top of x to start with, and there must not be any blocks on top of x and y (except when y is the table).
The easiest-to-understand approach to this problem is to move every block to the top of the table and stack them up according to the goal state.
The most obvious and extreme example is when you are given an initial state that is the same as the final state, then it is a total waste of time to take all the blocks away and put them back in their position.
