Julius Bloedel, was a Seattle lawyer, who originally hailed from Wisconsin.
In 1911 he and two partners, John Stewart and Patrick Welch, came to Canada and began acquiring large blocks of forests on British Columbia's Vancouver Island.
In the 1950's Bloedel's company merged with the HR MacMillan Company to form one of the largest forest products companies in the world.

MacMillan Bloedel sought an injunction prohibiting Greenpeace, two individuals, John and Jane Doe and Persons Unknown from protesting two of the world's largest log barges after two actions against the Haida Brave in August.
MacMillan Bloedel is the largest logging company operating in the rainforest and controls approximately 1- million hectares of public rainforest land.

Even if MacMillan Bloedel installs chlorine dioxide substitution "within a two-year period" to limit the flow of dioxins, a host of other chlorine compounds will continue to pour out of the mill, including chlorophenols -- toxics that science has proven can last 25 years in the environment.
According to these Environment Canada figures, MacMillan Bloedel's Powell River operation was one of the 11 worst polluting mills in Canada in 1985, and the biggest single industrial source of pollution in British Columbia.

On March 16, the province announced it might give MacMillan Bloedel up to 30,000 hectares of Crown land on northern Vancouver Island as well as the private cutting rights to another 90,000 hectares that the company already owns near Clayoquot Sound, on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and on the Sunshine Coast.
This land would be owned by MacMillan Bloedel, which could log it without any of the environmental considerations contained in the Forest Practices Code.

Though Weyerhaeuser and MacMillan Bloedel were already big-league players on their own, the lure of creating an even larger forest products enterprise was what brought them to the negotiating table.
Some industry analysts expressed concern that Weyerhaeuser was acquiring MacMillan Bloedel at the peak of a home-building cycle that has left demand for many products at an all-time high and is leaving suppliers with perhaps unsustainable sales results.
