  comic strip - Encyclopedia.com
comic strip combination of cartoon with a story line, laid out in a series of pictorial panels across a page and concerning a continuous character or set of characters, whose thoughts and dialogues are indicated by means of "balloons" containing written speech.
The immediate ancestor of the newspaper comic strip was the cartoon, especially popular in the late 19th cent.
With the creation of such pioneering strips as Happy Hooligan (1899), by Frederick Burr Opper, Charles ("Bunny") Schultze's Foxy Grandpa (1900), Outcault's Buster Brown (1902), and James Swinnerton's Little Jimmy (1905), all the essential components of the comic strip (e.g., regularity of cast, use of sequence of panels, and speech-balloons) were refined and securely established.

 Blondie - Don Markstein's Toonopedia
In fact, Blondie Boopadoop (her maiden name, and Betty Boop had not yet popularized the expression) was designed to follow in the footsteps of Young's earlier creations, Beautiful Babs and Dumb Dora, both of which were "pretty girl" strips of the sort made popular by Polly and Her Pals.
Blondie never made it big in animation, but she did appear in a TV special aired May 15, 1987.
Blondie may not be in movies or on TV anymore, but the eagerness with which other cartoonists' creations joined in proves she's still one of the biggest names in comics.

Blondie began her cartoon life in the same flighty, pretty-girl flapper image of my dad's earlier strips (some of which, in his own words, were better not remembered!).

The Big Apple: Blondie (Blond Brownie or Blonde Brownie)
The “brownie” was probably named after a popular fictional character of the 1890s, and “blondie” also perhaps took from the popularity of Chic Young’s “Blondie” comic strip (1930 - present).
Blondie is a popular comic strip created by Murat Bernard “Chic” Young and syndicated by King Features Syndicate.
Chic Young drew Blondie until his death in 1973, when the control of the strip passed to his son Dean Young.

Virtue Magazine » Blog Archive » Blondie Celebrates 75 Years
Co-star of the comic strip Blondie, Dagwood and his beautiful wife are celebrating their 75th anniversary as a part of the funny pages this year.
Perhaps this is due to the fact that the strip has almost become a family business in itself: after Young’s death in 1973, it was his son Dean who took over the writing of the strip.
Cartoonists also like to honor other cartoonists and comic strips in their own strips, as was the case when Charles Schulz announced his retirement, and when he later died on the morning his last strip ran.
