Screening for blood donation is notoriously poor, and usually consists of filling out a form with a few questions regarding habits and past medical history and a couple of basic medical tests.
Another way to get people to donate was on an "insurance" scheme in which those who required blood and were part of the scheme would be able to get blood, but would have to "replace" it somehow, be that through family or friends willing to donate on their behalf.
Obviously the direct pay for blood system may gain a lot of blood, but that blood is mostly the least desirable quality blood.

A second reason for concern is that blood collected in one land where a certain disease abounds may be used far away, where neither the public nor the physicians are alert to the danger.

Healthy & Natural Journal: Ensure Healthy Blood Pressure
If you have high blood pressure, your risk of suffering a heart attack is 300 percent higher than that of someone with normal blood pressure.
The interplay between sodium and potassium at the cellular level regulates blood volume and the relaxation of arteries, both of which are factors in blood pressure control.
Blood flow is decreased to less essential areas, thus leaving more water (and increased blood volume) for its most important, life-sustaining functions.

Researchers Set New Standard Of Care For Adult Cord Blood Transplant Patients   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
A major limitation of adult cord blood transplantation highlighted in the NEJM articles is the high likelihood of patients dying early after transplant.
This likelihood is due to: poor recovery of the patient's blood cell counts as a result of the relatively low number of cells in cord blood compared to bone marrow, or toxicity from the high doses of chemotherapy and radiation used in conventional transplant regimens.
In the first study, the combined use of two cord blood units from different donors was investigated as a way to increase the number of cord blood cells given to the patient on transplant day.

While weblogs had always included a mix of links, commentary, and personal notes, in the post-Blogger explosion increasing numbers of weblogs eschewed this focus on the web-at-large in favor of a sort of short-form journal.
These blogs, often updated several times a day, were instead a record of the blogger's thoughts: something noticed on the way to work, notes about the weekend, a quick reflection on some subject or another.
In September of 2000 there are thousands of weblogs: topic-oriented weblogs, alternative viewpoints, astute examinations of the human condition as reflected by mainstream media, short-form journals, links to the weird, and free-form notebooks of ideas.
