Threaded through the saltily amusing script and the open-hearted score are familiar Russell themes: the gains and losses of upward mobility; the difficulty of assessing the advantages in another person's social situation from a non-self-referring perspective; the burdens of being a woman and the yearning to escape from domestic drudgery...

Wynton Marsalis - Music Downloads - Online
The music of the mid-'60s Miles Davis Quintet had been somewhat overshadowed when it was new, but Marsalis' quintet focused on extending the group's legacy and soon other "Young Lion" units were using Davis' late acoustic work as their starting point.
The son of pianist Ellis Marsalis, the younger brother of Branford and the older brother of Delfeayo and Jason (the Marsalis clan as a whole can be accurately called "The First Family of Jazz"), Wynton (who was named after pianist Wynton Kelly) received his first trumpet at age six from Ellis' employer, Al Hirt.
In 1982, Marsalis not only formed his own quintet (featuring brother Branford and soon Kenny Kirkland, Charnett Moffett, and Jeff "Tain" Watts) but recorded his first classical album; he was immediately ranked as one of the top classical trumpeters of all time.

Willy Russell's 'Blood Brothers' which sails into the Lyric from the Liverpool Playhouse, is brilliant melodrama.
The first production was about the Fab Four and their music - hauntingly interpreted by Dickson, but with little need for originality or revelation of self.
Billed as a musical, perhaps because 'opera' has such lousy connotations and 'rock opera' bears an even worse burden, that is exactly what it is : melodramatic, moving as only carefully manipulated narrative and chord sequences ca be; and totally beguiling.

Russell, who was well known for straight plays, wrote the book, the lyrics and the music for this musical, giving it a score reminiscent of the early 1960s British Invasion music of the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five or even Petula Clark who sang the lead for a while during the show’s Broadway run.

Review of Blood Brothers with Barbara Trenn
The intriguing storyline and its modern, moving musical score are novel, universal and touching.
Blood Brothers is more than the tale of twin brothers separated, yet destined to reunite as closest friends - despite radically different upbringings and ignorance of their relation.
The characters similarly perform their way through the highlights and tragic lowlights of their lives via music and lyrics that are consistently wise, witty, but often poignantly sad.
