Trust (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trust (1981) is an album by Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
It is his fifth album, his fourth with the Attractions.
The songs on the album dealt with a general sense of disenchantment he felt during the time, with the recent election of the Conservative government as well as tensions within his first marriage, which gave them an overall cynical tone.

e-Wok - Review: Blood and Chocolate (1995 reissue) - Elvis Costello and the Attractions
Gone is the overslick synth-pop sound found on his previous two albums with The Attractions; gone too are the country-blues strains of King Of America, Costello's previous 1986 release.
The album continues to be fuelled by blood and chocolate -the cynic and romantic in Costello's make-up unable to reconcile the fact that they share the same personality.
Blood and Chocolate's bonuses are certainly a lift from the gloom of the majority of the album proper, beginning with EC's collaboration with Jimmy Cliff on "Seven Day Weekend".

Where King of America was a stripped-down roots rock affair, Blood & Chocolate is a return to the harder rock of This Year's Model.
The main difference between the reunion and the Attractions' earlier work is the tone -- This Year's Model was tense and out of control, whereas Blood & Chocolate is controlled viciousness.
Blood & Chocolate doesn't retain that high level of energy throughout the record, however, and loses momentum toward the end of the album.

Released in 1986, the album is one of the most highly praised by Costello fanatics, yet is by no means his best.
What makes Blood and Chocolate a classic is its odd juxtaposition with Costello's previous work.
While his prior albums are from the standpoint of an aggressive, pissed off young man, Blood and Chocolate presents the artist as a vulnerable and (as Costello put it himself) "pissed off divorcee."

The middle of the album is highlighted by the acoustic “New Amsterdam” with some great wordplay and another stomping cover, this time of Sam & Dave’s weepy “I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down.” “High Fidelity” is usually cited as a highlight too, but Elvis’ vocals sound surprisingly hoarse.
Overall, the album is a bit bogged down by its complexity and not much diversity towards the end.
Yeah, the drumming is primitive, it’s based around one note for the most part, and the opening line ‘blood and chocolate!!!’ can make one uncomfortable.

Elvis Costello: Blood & Chocolate ---Ink Blot Magazine
He was born Declan Patrick MacManus in London, the son of an Anglo-Irish music-hall bandleader, but his debut album on Stiff Records showed no signs of music-hall bounce at all: My Aim Is True was filled with angry, frustrated, impotent songs informed by punk, reggae, and rockabilly.
But even as the album was released, Elvis had assembled the crack outfit called the Attractions, and together they formed one of the best working bands in the world.
Every subsequent album showed more chutzpah and chops, and Costello's clever songs of rage made him a hero to fans on both sides of the Atlantic, but many casual followers deserted him when he branched out into country (Almost Blue), orchestral pop (IbMePdErRoIoAmL), and just plain radio pop (the underrated Punch the Clock).

The end result was one of his finest albums, King of America.
