Atonement by the Blood of Jesus -- A Defense
It has now been reoriented as a defense of the Christian doctrine of atonement, and of late (3/04) has been revised in light of our thesis relating honor and shame to the doctrine.
First of all, the need for an Atonement seems to hinge on the concept that our "sins" must somehow be "washed away," owing to a concept that no "unclean" thing (or person) can tolerate the presence of a perfect god, and thus there is the need for a mediator to cleanse such "unclean" mortal sinners.

There is not one historical instance of so-called blood atonement in this dispensation, nor has there been one event or occurrence whatever, of any nature, from which the slightest inference arises that any such practice either existed or was taught.
There are, however, in the sermons of some of the early church leaders some statements about the true doctrine of blood atonement and of its practice in past dispensations, for instance, in the days of Moses.

This was referred to as 'blood atonement.' Since such a theocracy has not been operative in modern times, the practical effect of the idea was its use as a rhetorical device to heighten the awareness of Latter-day Saints of the seriousness of murder and other major sins.

Overthrowing the Blood Atonement Doctrine of Jesus
Therefore, the scope of this paper will address the Blood Atonement Doctrine as it directly relates to the words of the biblical Jesus Christ who, unlike the prophets of the Old Testament or the writers of the other New Testament books, is the bestowed Creator Son of the Heavenly Father.
The Blood Atonement is predicated on the primitive belief that blood sacrifice cleanses one of his/her "evil" acts committed in both the past and the future.
How Atonement theorists can ignore this statement made by Jesus, just goes to show that still they do not know what the words mean `I desire mercy, not sacrifice' because they are still "condemning the innocent" who happens to be Jesus through their promotion of this Doctrine.

The Blood Atonement : In Jesus' Own Words   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
It is important that we as Christians truly understand the Plan of Redemption; and that we have a strong foundation in the Word upon which to stand during times of doubt and testing.
While I have explained God's Plan of Salvation quite fully in other articles, as well as touched on Christ's Blood Atonement on the Cross, I feel it is necessary to write another article which concentrates specifically on Jesus' own words regarding His approaching Death on the Cross, and subsequent Resurrection.
They say, 'Yes, we are saved by the Blood of Jesus Christ, BUT we still have to keep the Sabbath; or we have to do this; or we have to do that.' In other words, they are basically saying that the Blood of Jesus Christ is not enough.
