Bloodworms are the larvae of chironomid midges, small flies that superficially resemble mosquitoes.
Following successful small-scale trials of the insecticide alphacypermethrin against bloodworms during RIRDC project DAN146A, a permit for commercial trials of this material was issued by the National Registration Authority for Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (NRA).
Other field trials conducted against bloodworms as part of this project have looked at granular formulations containing a herbicide/insecticide combination, and at low rates of the insecticide fipronil, a material currently registered as a bloodworm seed treatment, but evaluated here as a direct spray application.
