In 1869 the Michigan Air Line, Macomb County's second railroad was built from Ridgeway (now Lenox) to Romeo, and was later extended through Washington, Shelby and to Pontiac.
The Grand Trunk's tracks in northeast Shelby Township have been removed and it is in the process of being converted for use in a "rails to trails" project called The Macomb Orchard Trail.

In May, 1940, the Board of County Road Commissioners and the Township Board of Bloomer Township, met to discuss the building of the roads in Bloomer Township.
What all started back in May of 1940 when the Road Commission and Bloomer Township entered into a joint venture to build roads is still today a major factor in how local road improvements are funded throughout Montcalm County.

The digging was contracted in one mile segments and the woods were soon filled with men laboring with picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows digging the canal and placing dirt alongside the ditch for a towpath.
An unspoiled portion north of 22 Mile road is on private property.A portion of the canal at Bloomer State Park at the end of John R Road is noted by a state marker.
In January 1998, a meeting was held with the historical committees/ societys of Shelby and Clinton Townships and the cities of Sterling Heights and Utica.

 Historical Resources of the Clinton River Trail
The canal route was from the mouth of the Clinton River near Mt. Clemens, to the mouth of the Kalamazoo River near Saugatuck.
In Clinton Township, Canal Park, at Canal Road and Clinton River Road, has some remains of an old lock and a wood dam used to create a slack water pond for the canal boats to cross the Clinton River.
In Shelby Township there is a nice stretch of the canal, with water in it.

 Alden & Helena Twp. Michigan History Page Two
In 1923 the Bank of Rapid City moved to Alden, operated in the same location as the first bank, and was known as Farmer's and Merchant's Bank.
There were other postoffices in the township, one at Clam River, and another at Comfort in 1913.
Other than two already mentioned, another called the State Road was built to Mancelona and was the main route to that village for several years.
