The Nouable-Ndoki National Park and surrounding area is now one of the last areas for free ranging forest elephants making conservation efforts in this area imperative for their survival.
The conservation presence has greatly diminished illegal hunting, but the temptation of easy money, close access to the park and an increased supply of guns from the Congo Civil War has taken a toll on the elephant populations.
It is hoped that increased conservation and involvement of the local community will continue to curb hunting in the area.

One minor error that jumped out at me was the setting of Saville Row and Vigo Street in Bloomsbury when they are in fact in Mayfair.
Beau Riffenburgh's new book, Nimrod, is a dramatic account of Shackleton's 1907-09 expedition in which he showed for the first time the courage and as a leader that he would later need again on the Endurance expedition.
It is published by Bloomsbury in October 2004.

This was to be the first of several periods - some very long - of research and work at the Library throughout almost five decades of my life.
It was also my first experience of travelling for almost an hour from the USAF Officers Mess in Regents Park to Colindale via the Northern 'Misery' Line - which was at that time actually quite pleasant and even relaxing.
After a busy year teaching large numbers of students in four courses each term at an over-crowded American state university, I arrived at the Library in mid-June and was required to be on hand for the beginning of the university's autumn term in early September.
