Scarborough RT (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The TTC had proposed to extend the Bloor-Danforth line using streetcars operating in a private right-of-way, but the ICTS system was used instead because the Province of Ontario agreed to pay a large portion of the costs.
Only a year after it opened, the TTC had to renovate its south-western terminus at Kennedy station, because the looped turnaround track, originally designed for streetcars under the earlier plan and not needed for the bi-directional ICTS trains, was causing derailments; it was replaced with a single terminal track.
Internally, the TTC uses the name ‘rapid transit’ to refer to all four lines, which is often confusing to the general public.

Bloor-Danforth (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two kilometres further on Bloor East, crossing the Bloor Street Viaduct, it continues just north of Danforth Avenue for six more kilometres before turning northeast for the final five kilometres, ending at Kennedy station (near Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue) which is also the southern terminus of the Scarborough RT.
The line generally does not run under Bloor Street or Danforth Avenue themselves, but is offset to the north: in some areas it runs under a parking alley behind the businesses on the north side of the street, while some other sections run under side streets.
Before the subway, the TTC operated streetcars from Jane Street in the West, to Lutterell Avenue (west of Victoria Park Avenue) using paired PCC streetcars or multiple units (MUs) from 1950 to the subway line openning in 1968.

So far as rapid-transit lines are concerned, TTC opened its 9.9-mile Spadima line in 1978, two extensions of the Bloor/Danforth line were opened two years later, and the seven-mile Scarborough line carried its first revenue passengers in March 1985.
Over the years, TTC has been able to extend lines, not just to meet existing demand but also to create demand--and the commercial and residential development that followed construction of new lines is an oft-told story.
TTC's steady gains in patronage began in 1979, when 346.2 million rides were recorded.

TTC staff have met with City and GO staff several times over the past two years regarding the proposal to improve the connection, which includes options to locate the TTC fare collection area within the parking levels of the Crossways’ development.
Although neither the TTC nor GO Transit can justify the expenditure needed to build the connection under current conditions, GO Transit has been mandated to conduct a preliminary study of the improvements required, and to accommodate the airport rail link in conjunction with their concurrent Georgetown corridor expansion project.

 SHEPPARD (TTC) : Encyclopedia Entry
The TTC considers the Sheppard East extension of the Sheppard subway to Scarborough Centre as one of their two top priorities for rapid-transit expansion, along with a northerly extension of the Spadina line.
The case for building the subway line was because the existing TTC bus service could not handle the commuter capacity; full buses passed by crowds at bus stops.
The TTC still hopes to extend the line to Scarborough Town Centre, but the westward extension is no longer a priority.

 cars - Toronto Transit Commission
As new TTC routes since the 1940s have generally been operated by other modes, and the less busy streetcar routes have also been converted, streetcar routes are now focused on the downtown area, with none running further north than St.
At one point the TTC was renowned as one of the world's best transit systems, however the past twenty years have seen enormous funding cuts to the system, as well as a shift towards a car-dominated culture.
In 1954 the TTC adopted its present name, opened its first subway line, and greatly expanded its service area to cover the newly formed municipality of Metropolitan Toronto (which eventually became the enlarged city of Toronto).

According to TTC numbers, 122,400 people travel through the Etobicoke section of the Bloor-Danforth line on a daily basis.
"The Bloor extension was created in an era when governments invested in public transit - they saw it as (something) in the city's interest overall - not just for TTC riders but for the economy generally," he says.

The TTC has since completely ignored the lessons of Arthur's design and whipped up its own signs featuring white Helvetica Bold on a black ground with a wee strip of colour at the top to suggest (not indicate) the line you're on.
Indeed, this is one of the risks of the TTC's approach to the redesign: Apart from installing the St. George prototype, Arthur has been hired only to produce a "design intent"-- in other words, he was hired to brainstorm.

 Spadina Station Walkway
Each walkway is 450-ft. in length slightly less than the length of a TTC platform at 500-ft. The horizontal walkways are located in a standard corridor joining the Yonge-University-Spadina (YUS) and Bloor-Danforth (BD) Subway Lines at Spadina Station.
To make this connection feasible for the average patron, the TTC built a moving walkway to ease the long trip between the Spadina line platforms and the rest of Spadina station.
The daily usage of the corridor is 11,000 patrons, of which a portion use the moving walkway.

The City of Toronto, of course, can't fully fund the TTC this year because the Province of Ontario, of course, hasn't stepped up with more bucks to offset the downloading that crippled Toronto over the last few years.
So, today we hear that the TTC is going to save some money ($5 million) by allowing overcrowding.

It is a workhorse of the TTC just like the Yonge subway line, and it very nearly found itself operating beneath Queen Street, where its impact on Toronto’s remnant streetcar lines could have been much harsher.

Feeling kind of foolish, I approached him; "Um, can you tell me where Bloor is?" The man responded "Oh dear, you're going to have to take a bus." Typical, I thought, this place is at the one station on the Bloor/Danforth line that's not on Bloor or Danforth.
